Northern Mich lakefront flower choices

Central Lake, MI

Just joined the forum...have only been gardening 2 years but have been fairly adventurous! My daughter is getting married on the lakefront (Torch Lake) next summer. I would like to very subtly add some informal flowers to our lakefront space...nothing too fussy. Lots of afternoon sunshine hits this spot since we are facing west. Mid summer blooms preferred. Low maintenance.

Marigolds are tough, sun loving and dependable

Hey, we are in the same area! I'm in williamsburg. When is she getting married? If you put in some prennials now, like delphinium, hollyhocks and such, they should bloom by july. If it is twards the end of July, then annuals like zinnias, marigolds, Dalias and cosmos are pretty fuss free. They can be popped into the ground as plants or seeded. Home Depot has that great hanging basket sale on Memorial Day weekend and we have used thoes for summer wedings. At my nieces wedding, we hung the baskets from the trees. It was beautiful.
Welcome!

Welcome!

Are you looking to add annuals or perennials? If you like perennials you can't go wrong with things like catmint, coneflower, hyssop, lavendar and daisys. If you are thinking annuals cosmos is easy and has a long bloom time. It would help to know which month the wedding is since different perennials bloom at different times of the year.

I had a backyard wedding for my son years ago. It was in mid August when the garden is starting to look 'tired'. I got some good deals on hanging baskets at local nurseries and I elevated them on upside down pots here and there around the garden and it added just the right splash of color. I had a trellis with roses growing on it to which I added miles of tulle and some silk flowers. They were married in front of that arch. We had two big tent canopes set up with tables and chairs. We had about 60 people there. All went well and the weather cooperated. We were able to give them a beautiful wedding for not a lot of money.

I hope you have a nice day for your special wedding too. You'll have to post some pics for us all to ooohhh and aaaahhhh over.

I was thinking lillies too. They look showy from the water in front of our house. (I try to grow them, but the deer love them too much.)
Torch lake is beautiful. It will be a lovely wedding.
