LA convention

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Here is B. 'Lotusland' at Lotusland Gardens. This is a monster begonia. Time is very limited when you are there - 2 hours and you must stay with the guide. Group size is ten. We did not get enough time to view all the begonias in the garden so you have to take pictures as fast as you can.

B. 'Janet Brown' (named for the present president of the ABS) on display at The Gazebo (Mike Flaherty's garden shop). This was 3 to 4 foot tall - wow!!

B. 'Jelly Roll Morton' at Ades & Gish. They had many specimen plants that were at least 2 foot across. They had very large plants for less than $20. If only I had room in my suitcase. I had to settle for the 4 inch pots instead.

B. 'Mr. Hunt' at Kartuz. Upright jointed rhizomes are so exquisite.

Tuberous begonias at the show had blooms the size of saucers.

The Huntington was the most disappointing because there was not enough time to actually see any of the gardens. More time was spent at the conservatory (Atlanta has a better one) and the plant sale (which was okay). The C&S area had some interesting plants but a lot of those can be found at Wal-Mart and Lowe's.

Here is a very large anthurium at the conservatory.

Last one - this is B. 'Red Fred' at the show - a sport of 'Freddie'. What a beauty!

oooh, I love the Janet Brown and red Freddie!!

Me too Susan. Great pics Butch.

Those pics are awesome. I love to see mature specimens of begonias!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Awesome reliving it! Thanks for posting - My photos are still unsorted and unviewed. BUT all 65 begonias have been repotted and or put in terrariums! Whew!!!
The good news is, in my fits of insanity at the sales, I only bought duplicates on two begonias!

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Lali,

Are you trying to make me look bad? I got maybe 50 begonias but they are all in the original pots. Hopefully this weekend I will repot them (plus some older ones). I may just use plastic or styrofoam cups until next spring (I will have a time fitting everything inside this year).

That's great that you only bought two duplicates (they are always good for a little insurance, don't you think?). I actually bought two duplicates while there - 'Red Bluff' and 'Janet Brown' because I liked them so much.

Here is 'Madame Queen' from Ades & Gish.

naw, I was just excited to mix up a batch of Joan's soil mentioned in her lecture, especially since I was able to get a bag of the oak leaf mold (mould?)
(I'll post the recipe soon)

So I mixed a huge batch and got busy repotting. That and I'm leaving for Maui in a few days and needed to get them to where they could be taken care of while I'm gone. Normally I'm not this organized!!!

My super huge Madame Queen from A&G is my new Love!!! And at only $20 bucks, what a bargain!! it has a bonus hitchhiking fern in the pot too (Holly Fern I think).
I swear I bought two Suzanne's from Kartuz, but I can only find one. I thought I got one as an insurance since it always goes so high on eBay. But I suppose in my begonia stupor I put one back.

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

I was hoping you or Kell would post a picture of your great buy of 'Madame Queen'. I would've bought one too if it weren't for that silly rule about two carry on bags (next time I will check my camera or computer and carry on a MQ - yeah, right). I settled for a small one at the plant sale (I decided to try it once again).

Here is another specimen sized plant at A&G. One of the snake series, I think.

I have many begonia pots where ferns have come up (okay, maybe I sprinkled some spores in there). Anyway, they make good pairs until the ferns take over.

'Suzanne' is a very slow grower for me. I have 3 I got as cuttings last year. If you find the secret to growing it, let the rest of us know. Same for 'Pink Minx'.

I forgot about you saying you were heading to Maui soon. No wonder you got everything potted up. I think mould is more British unless you are talking about moulding (or molding) for your walls.

Anyone use Bayer's Rose Care on begonias? I just bought some which is a systemic insecticide, fungicide, and fertilizer. Was this discussed on the Yahoo group? If it was, I glossed over it. Anyway I will give it a go this weekend.

I did get a couple of begonia pictures at the Huntington. Here is a moth eaten exotica amongst what appears to be some kind of pellonia.

Did anyone get to the tropical gardens at the Huntington?

I would ask if you two had a great time, but since you came home with 50/65 new Begonia's, I assume the answer is yes. lol

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Overall I had a good time. The tours were too short for the most part (Lotusland and Huntington especially). Lots of places to buy begonias though - The Gazebo, The Huntington had some, Ades & Gish were great, Kartuz had lots to offer, and of course the plant sale. Even picked up a great rex at Home Depot plus a neat one at a local nursery on the first day.

There were some snafus with scheduling but they were not a big deal. Met some interesting folks and hope to see them at the next convention. The week flew by when you look back on it but it is so nice to be back home.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Always wonderful to come home Butch. I would appreciate it more if I
could just get away for a while.
Maybe DH and I can escape to Hot Springs for the day or Memphis.

Butch, We want to see what your new Begonia's look like. All rhizo's or did
you bring some new canes home with you? You can taunt and delight us
at the same time. lol

Jackie,

Most of my stuff is on the small side and has some leaf damage (after stuffing 50+ plants in a big canvas duffle bag and checking it in and hoping for the best) but maybe I can show a few.

I don't remember all the names (and have a few without names).

Here is Red Bluff from the Gazebo (I split this with a couple of ladies so I got two fat rhizomes which is plenty)

I don't have a name for this but I liked the looks of it. Can't remember if it was from Kartuz or Ades & Gish.

Here is another no name but it has a thick waxy leaf.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole

This was labeled 'Red Bluff' too but it doesn't look like the first one I posted. Again I liked it so I didn't worry about the name.

I don't remember all the names here. The big one on the left I bought earlier in the year and is 'Carmel Brown', the big puckered one is the one I don't remember, the big rounded leaf on the right is 'Page 13' (I think), and the small one in the back is 'Kula'. The handwriting on some of these are hard to read.

Edited to add: The big puckered one is 'Iron Maiden'.

I don't remember the one on the left, the middle is 'Othello' and it had several broken stems which I potted in another pot, and the one on the right is 'Palomar Crested' which looks similar to 'Essie Hunt'.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

The one on the left is a cross with a semp and ? (I think vitifolia) and the one on the right is 'Camelot' which had very large leaves before I packed.

how much fun just looking at 'your fun' and .................begoniacrazii and kell..............get those pictures organized for us............even if you wait until you return from Maui..............

Butch, Love Carmel Brown and Iron Maiden. Crested Palomar and
Camelot are pretty Begonia's too.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Great pictures, Butch. I am so far behind on even looking at my pictures from the begonia trip. I have had a busy week which included a San Francisco birthday party, going to a nursery 3 days in a row and a garden 3 days in a row and then a weekend in Carmel. Today we went to a tomato fest there and it was such fun. I have only unwrapped and watered my plants I got. But I did buy soil and pots for them the other day so I am set to go tomorrow after I go back to that nursery and garden in the morning. LOL

This is Lali and myself after packing the car to come home. Rear view.

Poor Butch flew so he was so limited on how nuts he could get.

Lali and I went to HD and each bought the big tupperware container in the picture. We could fit most of our 4 inch pots in there on their sides. We wrapped them tight with newspaper then stacked them sideways. Butch, Marci bought one too and she taped it shut and brought it on the plane as baggage.

Here is a real fun basket that Julie Newmar had. Butch do you know which begonia was in it? We all got a tour of her garden which was begonia laden.

How much fun!!!! I love seeing these pictures...............the car route is always the best......can shove more plants in....................

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Kell,

Where was the yellow blooming tree? I didn't see it on the roof. Ha!

The begonia in the hanging basket in Julie Newmar's yard is 'Marmaduke'. A great begonia in the summer but a real stinker in winter.

Here is a close up of the same basket. It must have been the highlight of the week since there were quite a few pictures posted on the Yahoo site.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Here is my 'Snoopy' (at least I think it is which is a sport from 'Marmaduke' - my 'Marmaduke' is a lot smaller).

Kell, Love the photo of Marmaduke at Julie Newmar's. Hmm Julie Newmar,
as in catwoman?
Butch, Love the Snoopy, gorgeous foliage.

Jackie

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Yep, Julie "Catwoman" Newmar.

Here are some more begonias in her yard - 'Cowardly Lion' and 'Little Brother Montgomery'. The yard was fairly small and very packed with plants with lots of begonias here and there.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

I think this is 'Gene Daniels' with a few blooms in J.N.'s yard.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Butch, love the bi-colored flowers on Gene Daniels. I killed my plant before it
made blooms. My Little Brother Montgomery didn't last long either. lol
Logees sold it as a cane and it didn't act like a cane for me. My Cowardly Lion looks good considering I killed all the other Rhizo's I ever bought. I needed
to repot C.L. but since fall is here, kinda afraid to now. I might lift it up and
add 1/2 inch of fresh mix to the bottom of the pot, no more than that. Just
enough to let it hold a bit more moisture but not enough to cause
over-watering this winter.

Jackie
