OK... I have a new Hawaiian Double White.. it was a seedling this spring.. and is now a large tree... with one of the thickest trunks of any I have.. even 2-3 year old plants.. so she's healthy and doing fine.. and now is starting to flower..
The buds started dropping.. I was going to rename it Hawaiian Double Drop..the only thing nice was when you stepped on the dropped buds they woul;d pop.. like bubble wrap..
Then the buds started to open a single trumpet... with dence filling of additional skirting inside.. but not dropping down to being a double.. I opened one of these flowers.. a trumpet with a body that felt like a snake that had swallowed a pig.. inside I found not another trumpet... but a shredded white flower.. jamed into the trumpet.. I was going to post this problem question... but I thought I should wait..
OK.. now more flowers are open.. about 1/2 have double decended tiny trumpets inside... and even in ones not dropped down yet... they feel light and quite empty in the outer flower... but the other 1/2 are still forming jamed up... with a shredded white bloom inside..
Question... is this somehow usual.. to have a shredded flower inside a trumpet... I sure wish one would somehow find a way to open... a softball sized shredded flower hanging from a trumpet...
here's a picture of both types of flowers... they are obvious which are which I believe..

Hawaiian Double White.. Question:
Sorry I can't answer your questin but wanted to say I think they look pretty nice! Do they have a fragrance?
Doubles can be very funny, my Pink Smitty did the same thing at first. They take a while to figure it out sometimes, and the weather can also do this. Almost ever double I have has first dropped it's buds, then had deformed ones before they came out right.
Look at the good side, that plant is amazingl Usually the doubles grow much slower.
Give her more time, bet she will get it right soon.
Gordon,
Below is a picture of 'Tiara' bloom last fall. I have it as my desk-top picture. It had the fully opened bloom with another one all crumpled-up inside that never did drop and open. I was new to brugs then and thought that was what it should be. I wonder now if the second trumplet was supposed to drop and open? I loved it the way it was.
I sent a very large cutting that came up from the base of the plant to a DGer. My mother plant failed to make it through the winter inside. I don't know what I did wrong.
I think your brug is a very pretty one just like it is.
I'm taking two of your picoteed datura plants to our east Texas RU on the 22-23 in Tyler. Two of the gardeners requested them from my list of plants. I still have 11 which have taken a growth spurt and have outgrown their pots. I must bump them up to bigger pots soon. I'll post a picture when they bloom.

I love the look of these plants! Can anyone recommend a good supplier of seeds for the double forms of these plants shown on this page?
Louise,
That IS pretty...looks a bit like 'Golden lady.' I am going to try to go to the RU. Do you have andy seeds for the picoteed datura plants ? I love Datura also. I would be forever grateful...
Dragonfly. Brugmansia don't come true from seeds. There is a possibility that if you get seeds from a double the resulting seedling will also be double but it may not be. The only sure way to get a double is to get cuttings.
Thanks for letting me know, Jazz. I would have ordered the seeds off Ebay and gotten skunked!
Or you might have ended up with something awesome and wonderful :) But it's better to go in knowing what you are getting :)
What a beauty, Gord!

Nice pictures, Gordon and Louise. Rosella is a pretty brug too. My brug blooms may all be over by tonight with a frost warning in the works and possible freeze warning for the northern part of the state. I'm going to spray with the Anti Stress 2000 and hope that it will help protect them from the predicted frost. Keep those pictures coming.
Where do you get anti stress 2000?
Jazz,
Here is a link
http://www.polymerag.com/orders.htm
ouch
What?
Jazz, I bought the Anti Stress 2000 from the site Yardqueen gave you. It wasn't so bad at about $25 a quart and that will go quite a ways. I mixed up a quart of it and sprayed my citrus trees (3) and two hibiscus, a begonia, and about 5 brugs. I want to see if there is any difference in the morning.
Ohh.. I went back and looked again.. the first time I looked I saw the 2.5 gallon price and I said ouch..
How much does a quart of concentrate make?
It should make a little over 5 gallons.
Thanks Brugie :)
I'm going to say one more thing and then let Gordon's thread go back where it was before I mentioned the Anti Stress stuff. If you get it and start to spray and see that it is white, don't panic. It does dry clear.
Okay now, lets talk about the great double whites on this thread. LOL!
OK... so here's one of the doubles that didn't descend.. you can see the tight skirting stufed inside... again... it's not a second trumpet there... In nature this would be the last generation for the plant... as there's no insect small enough to squeeze it's way up into the flower...it's so tight..

OK.. so I've cut away and removed all of the outer trumpet in this photo... the only thing remaining is the inner skirting which was just sticking out the end of the trumpet in the picture before... I've heard this described as a malformed trumpet..but rather than deformed... in this one it is just identicle to one growing next to it... called a shredded white... no difference I can tell..
So,... I think this Hawaiian white is making inner trumpets with the inner flower being a trumpet on some ... and others with a shredded white bloom inside...
Also... there is another type showing it's self here on my plant... on some of the decended trumpets... where there's an outerflower... a descended second trumpet sticking a few inches below the skirting of the outer one... but this second trumpet has a shredded white bloom inside of it also.. a double with a shreded as a third... it never ceases to amaize me...
