Peonies in Texas

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Inherited peony from my mother......that has been 3 years. They have more than abundant foliage. This year they were so promising with lots of buds. Only 1 bloom.....the others shriveled at the smallest stage and fell off. The foliage is really taking up too much room in my cutting garden but I don't know where to put them. Is this a good time to move.....do I cut them back now...if so, how much.

Help.

My one peony has been through so much, and it wants to go back north! I have it in full sun and will move it to more shade this winter. It makes one perfect bloom each spring and then burns and drops all other buds. I guess this is Texas after all, but I want peonies!

Me, too. Saw somewhere to put a bag a crushed ice on them but it didn't say when or how long.

I have one (red) in complete shade. Planted it a couple of years ago and it produced its first bloom last spring. The other is a white that is a couple of years older. The first year it produced one bloom. Each year it has put on more buds. This past spring it had at least a dozen blooms as well as a few buds that did not open. It is planted where it receives dapple shade and not more than an hour of sun. No afternoon sun at all. The white one was a pass along plant that has been a proven bloomer for the lady that gave it to me. The red one was from a mail order source.

Oh Patsy, I have never seen a red peony. Actually, there are a lot of things I have never seen. When I have had the one or two blooms it is white with traces of pink and thin lines of red. I am impossible when it comes to knowing the names of what I have. DG is a place with so many well educated garden people and I still act like a kindergartener.

LouC, do u know which one you have? I got mine in a DG trade (Sarah Bernhardt, if I'm not mistaken) and has put out lots of leaves but no blooms. My plant is 3 yrs old. My research indicates they need enough chill hours to flower. Mine is planted inground, in a part-sun area of my garden. I don't care that it hasn't bloomed, it reminds me of my friend who is no longer a subscriber. Since you are in z8a, they should do well for me. I think if you google peonies for southern gardens you can find a couple of varieties you can grow successfully.

this article lists a few cultivars which are good southern garden performers. I was aware of S Berhardt & Festiva Max, but this article names others.

Well, these are another plant from my mother's garden. I am so sentimental about the least little things. They have been here for three years. The foliage has multiplied three times over and I still get only 1 or two blooms. This year lots of buds that shriveled and fell off. Think they made an effort because of the late freeze. Going to move them today to the front bed where there is shade and no protection. Gets a little colder than the back where I have created a sort of micro climate. I will check Google though.
Thanks

sentimentality is grossly underrated. Nothing better than a garden w/ history.

Wonder if fertilizer has anything to do with the size of the foliage. I have been very lax in caring for mine as they are both in out of the way beds. I have not even been watering them in the summers. No care whatsoever. I am ashamed to admit that but it is true. Maybe they are in the survival mode. BTW my white one has a few stripes of red occasionally.
