Mom's Hibiscus

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Hi All,

As you guys all know, I do a lot of things with my mom, and we share a great love of hibiscus. Since I'm staying at her house this weekend, I thought I'd show off her flowers for a change :-) These pictures are from today.

First one is a "first bloom" on her Monte Carlo.

Next is the second day on this Pina Colada bloom. My plant is smaller than hers, but already has a couple little buds. I sure hope my blooms are as pretty!

Her American Legend had eight blooms on it when I arrived yesterday afternoon. Here's one of them. This is just an all around beautiful plant - blooms, lovely leaves, everything.

She's got a couple without names. This first one is just huge, probably almost 6 feet and is constantly filled with lovely blooms It must be a hardy too, because it didn't have near the trouble as our tropicals over this past winter.

Next is another no name. It also is quite large, although not as big as the fluffy pink. Doesn't bloom quite as often either, but it reminds her of when we went to Hawaii. Pretty, huh?

This one I believe, is Snow Queen. She purchased it upon retirement in 1999 as a standard. I've always loved it. First the flower, then the gorgeous foliage.

Here's the foliage - just beautiful even when it's not in bloom!

Now, just a couple non-hibiscus pictures, just cuz...

I found this pretty spider in her Cannas. Mom just HATES any type of bug or spider and wanted me to kill it for her. I only kill Black Widows, and only then because they are so dangerous, so instead of a death sentence, I just "relocated" it. Shhhh, don't tell ;-)

And lastly, a picture of one of her lovely plumerias. She brought this back as a little unrooted cutting from Hawaii when we went in 2000, and it's totally thrived even though she never fertilizes and gets heavy winds here - go figure! My little cuttings were pretty much DOA, of course I didn't have a yard or anything back then either. Since then, I've gotten much better at plumerias :-)

Have a beautiful day!

I want Strawberry Fields, and I feel the same way about spiders

LOL, I always call her the "Bug Terminator". She always has a shoe and her portable vacuum ready to snuff out their little lives at a moment's notice ;-)

I don't mind outdoor spiders (except black widows--I kill them when I see them too!). Indoors is a different thing, I have a deal with them that if they stay outside and eat bugs then I'll let them live, but if they wander in the house then they're toast!

Nice pics Karen,
that Monte Carlo is one of the prettiest doubles I've ever seen.

Love the pictures. Pina Colada question.....does it open more? I like the color of it.

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Yes, Brugie, she said it was fully open the first day. Mom says it's one of her favorites with it's big cheery yellow bloom. She has it in a turqoise pot, and let me tell you the combination is just gorgeous!

I'll bet it is a sight to see. Thanks.

Karen - I've GOT to have the Strawberry Fields Forever!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Such great pictures once again, Karen. I love all your Mom's plants and even her spider!

I have added Monte Carlo to my most favorite list. I already had Strawberry Fields Forever. Thanks for sharing them.
