Have problems with deer..plant EE

Athens, OH

Well, the EE have survived another year of deer. Early in the season they cropped off a few leaves of the Colocasias and even one of a Xanthosoma. But now there is no stopping them (except the impending cold weather). And, thanks to Brian we even have two cold hardy Colocasias now (Pink China and Black Pearl).

I thought I'd share some pics of EE in Ohio. I like to intersperse them with my perennials and other tropicals (peruvian daffodils and amaryllis).

As you can see, much of my gardens are on hills...which makes for better drainage (which is good since we have clay).

Here's another view.
The A. Macrorrhiza is now 7 feet tall.

Here's another garden.
It's mostly shade with part sun in the afternoon.

A third garden.
This is a new strip of garden, thanks Tabasco for suggesting the lasagne newpaper layering approach. It has mid morning sun and afternoon part sun.

And to top it all off, a bed of mostly EE (and a few canna).

These are EE from a deer resistance study I am conducting and some EE I have collected on travels.

The tallest one (~ 3 o'clock) is over 5 feet tall and wide. A little cluttered, but the cats love to play in the "jungle" .

Rox_male can you tell me where to go (I mean on DG) to read about the lasagne newpaper layering approach.

Rox, LOVELY! I don't know how I missed this thread (too wrapped up in others, I'd expect) I love your hills, I'm doing something like that here next spring, as we are clay and rocks, I doubt the lasagna technique breaks down rock, or does it? Thanks so much for posting pics of your place. How's the winter storage plan coming?

Athens, OH

I don't think the lasagne technique breaks down rocks, but it does add several inches of good soil above the rcoks and clay.

The storage plant is coming along well. I am going to take everyones ideas and create a new thread re: EE storage. I hope it will be timely for others as well.

That would be GREAT! You mean you've compiled a list of instructions/options, so to speak? Wow! You've done a lot of work, processing and organizing information... I'm most grateful, Rox and I'm sure tons of us will find it so helpful. I'll watch for your new post! You're a doll!

Hi Rox,
You typed ..."The storage plant is coming".. and I had a wonderful mental image of one of those cartoon conveyor-belted ACME gadgets which would suck in a fully potted growing EE at one end and produce a neatly burlap wrapped tuber at the other, ready to stick on a basement shelf for the winter - the human mind is a weird and peculiar place, LOL, Kaelkitty.

Kael I love your mental image, that would be the thing to have when getting ready to put things in the GH. Where do I go to find one.

Athens, OH

LOL. I meant storage plan.
