SUnny Wind question

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Sunny Wind has lived happily in a pot in my garden for about 7 years. Suddenly it has decided it wants to be taller and is shooting up; it is presently about 4'. All I know is these plants were bred to be shorter and fuller. Could it have reverted to some tall characteristic in it's genetic makeup?

I was about to plop it in the ground but the spot I have picked out for it needs something short and full - like it used to be. Anyone know how tall this plant can get?

All of mine grow upright after a while. 4 ft is about the norm for height.

Thanks Kyle, guess mine is just going through a delayed adolescence. I'll find a better place for it.

Ardesia, I've got about three that have reached this height so far. My Palm Springs has also grown quite large, and is standing just under 5' right now.

Some of them do get tall; I have a NOID single red that is at least 8' right now. The Wind series were bred to be short and full. However, they do not say just how short on their website.

Time to trim back, when bloom is faded, cut that stem shorter. Makes plant more bushy and not so tall.

You folks sure they weren't treated with a growth regulator? Many nurseries will treat with cyclocell which creates closer leaf nodes and many more buds. Sooner or later if the plant survives it will shoot up to it's natural stature. Problem with cyclocell and other growth regulators is that they can be very difficult to grow out of and many plants will die before they can actually grow into the plant they are supposed to be. I'm sure you have all seen the nice azeleas that come around Easter. Compact plants with lots of flowers. Those have all been treated.

Very interesting David. I just learned another new thing :)

Thanks David, that is what I was wondering about. I have always trimmed it to stay in shape and it is a very full bush but this growth spurt is a new occurance and I thought it might have outgrown it's "treatment" (if Yoder does use growth regulators.)

It is going into the ground anyway; I need my valuable container real estate for prettier hibiscus. LOL
