Agapanthus borers

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Recently I dug up a 4' clump of Agapanthus. They had not performed well for several years and I thought a change of location would help. When I got them out I found they were infested with what I am pretty sure is borers.

There is another clump of a different variety (not sure of it's name but it is a smaller plant with deep blue flowers) nearby that is still healthy and I was wondering if I should treat them with something to prevent or kill any more borers. Not much for using chemicals but I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks.

How sad:(

I'd cut away any mushy, rotten parts and soak them in hot water with ten percent (or so) chlorox like people do for Iris borers.

Thanks, I threw the first bunch away but I have several more clumps that I will dig up and check for borers.

pls keep us posted. seems like a really awful pest. Somehow I always thought agapanthus were tough as nails kinda plants and certainly one I to which I never paid much attention, except to admire the gorgeous blooms.

you've changed my mind.

I was not paying attention, perhaps I should have noticed sooner. They were not blooming as well and the leaves kept getting sunburned. I thought it was the cultivar; I had rescued these bulbs from a garden waste dump. Someone had thrown two huge pots of them away and I brought them home (I'm really good at dumpster diving.) They thrived here for about 5 years in the garden before the decline.
A good lesson for recording my observations; maybe I had better start.
