Does any body have any of the Burgandy Gaillardia?

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

I can't recall the name but I'd sure like to have a few seeds.

Thanks,
La

Hereford, TX(Zone 7a)

Yes, I have lots of it.

I grew it from seed 2 yrs ago. I haven't harvested any seed yet, but I can.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

It sounds very pretty, is it hardy and reseeds itself?

Hereford, TX(Zone 7a)

It is very hardy, but I'm not sure if it reseeds. I have only had it for 2yrs. This year is the first time it has really bloomed and it has done that nonstop!!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Do you have other seeds? I have a classified ad on Dave's. Please check it and see if you would like me to send something for them.

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

I am going to have a ton of this seed, although I've never collected the burgundy seed, but these crazy plants have bloomed non stop for me this year, early and still going strong, I love them. Don't quote me on this , but I had a gardening buddy( and a good one at that) tell me they will reseed.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

I started the regular Indian Blanket from seed this spring (snitched from a neighbor's plant, LOL) and have had a pretty good display even this first year. I had heard that Gaillardia was hard to start from seed, but I had 6 seedlings grow under lights and 2 survived winter-sowing (which in itself was a miracle considering our harsh late frost). Oddly enough the 2 wintersown plants have not bloomed where the other 6 have.

Sorry about the rambling. If either of you could spare a few seeds I'd sure like to give it a go. I do have a few things on my trade list or could send SASE if you prefer.

Thanks!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I am pleased to hear that burgandy gaillaria has viable seeds. I have some that are struggling - but have gone to seed, so I will save some and try again.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I would love some seed if you end up with extra, crashbandiscoot and will send a SASBE if you let me know.

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Kathy, I would love to share! It might be a little longer than I had hoped before I can collect good dry seed. I started collecting yesterday before the rain came, but didn't get to those. We are supposed to get rain for a few days. I'll try to get some in here to start drying.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Hey what about me? LOL, you remember me? The one who started the thread? Can I have some too? :-P

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Of course!!!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks, cbd:

Not in a hurry. Spent today putting in another bed (set my target at finishing 8 new beds this summer and have only finished 6 - eeeek!!!! and now I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to put in there. At least that's one other corner I don't have to mow, thank goodness.

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Whoa katie! That's a lot of new beds! I cut some of these seed heads this morning, it got pretty wet here, so I am hoping all is well with these seed. I have read , a concern with some of the Gaillardia not coming true from seed. I do not know anything about them, as I am new to these plants. All I know is I have seeds from the plants and would love to share, As for the seed being true or viable, well, I'm just learning. So if you still want them let me know.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I grew burgundy Gaillardia from seeds I collected in a friends garden... and I got burgundy blooms this year! I'll see about saving some seeds to offer around, but I don't usually manage to get everything bagged & tagged until after the holidays.

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Cool, critter! I reckon mine will work then!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Lala how did you start your indian blanket seeds? I had problems growing my goblin and sorry but I want to get in on this swap too lol Did you cover your seeds? I don't remember if I covered mine or not. But I do understand them blooming before the ones WS cause they were planted earlier and probably came up earlier :o)

Critter how did you plant yours? I'll have some helnium? Not really sure of the name they may be mardi graws or just red and gold they look alike to me the nursery I got them from didn't have a name on them. I tried to WS these last year but nothing came up I'm trying them under lights this year just thought you should know I think I'm just having trouble sowing them though I really think the seeds are good I'm just having trouble planting them lol

Would you like to trade for some Burgundy Blanket Flower Critter, sometime around the holidays sounds fine with me.

See Lala you started something lol I've been wanting these seeds forever! Well since they came out anyway lol
Lea

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I wintersowed them, with my usual variation of growing the seedlings on for a while in 2 inch cell packs before planting out (tiny seedlings just perish in my "wild blue yonder" perennial bed). Gah, with so many plants to get out into the garden this fall, I can't even think yet about trading seeds! LOL

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I was thinking the same thing that's why I said around the holidays lol I have about 200 pots yet from WS lol Thanks anyway Critter lol

I can't seem to plant those tiny seedlings either soon after they come up that's why I have all of these pots to plant this fall it got too hot to do the rest of them in the spring!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes, if you still have some to share, I'd love to try them. Lest you think I'm more ambitious than I am: I still plan to amend the soil in the beds as I compost. Right now, I'm only adding compost to each hole as I plant. If I waited until the beds were perfect, then I'd never get anywhere . . . need the inspiration of the planting. Fortunately, in a couple cases, I only needed to get rid of a layer of sod. Unfortunately, in those cases, the beds ended up bigger than I had originally planned.

Oh well, I've been here four years now, and for a number of reasons, I haven't done as much as I should have. Just trying to make up for lost time, I guess. I hope that my hot flashes will keep me warm through the winter and I can work on some other beds cleanup through the rains. We'll see . . .

I haven't had success with seed, but FireVicar swears by winter sowing, so I'll try with his guidance.

Thanks!!

Kathy

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

OK , katie59 and Lala_Jane, I have them collected and they appear dry, I am new to these so , I'm guessing the seed is in the "fuzz" LOL not sure, critter?? somebody? LOL
But you folks are welcome to them, are you in the exchange?
In a few weeks I will also have some Arizona Sun seed as well. No trades are needed as I'm using this as a learning experience. That is if you do not care to be part of my experiments. LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yeah, the seeds look like little badminton birdies, and I think the actual seed part is at the pointy bottom end.

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Cool thanks! and I love your desciption, pretty accurate actually! Ok , I'm on a roll now!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Crash, can I be in on the experiment I'll send you a sabe please, please with sugar on top lol That is if you have enough?
Lea

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Sure LeBug! They should be ready now, and I am in the exchange. I should have enough.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I'm in the exchange, as well. I'll send you a SASBE. Thanks!!

Katie59

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Thanks Crash I ure appreciate it! I'm all smiles :o)))))))

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

Lala, did you say you grew blanket flower from seed & it came true? I just harvested 40 seed heads to send to distantkin's newbie RR but I was afraid they might not end up being anything like the parent plant. I used to have a Gaillardia 'goblin' & all of its babies were 'golden goblin'. Very pretty but quite different than the parent.

Also anyone - are there any burgandy Gaillardia seeds left anywhere? I would like some if anyone wants to trade or I can send SASE.

Hereford, TX(Zone 7a)

I should have plenty to send. I'm in the addy exchange.

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

Oh! Thank you. I will try to get my SASE in the mail tomorrow. Anything you would like from my list? I'm a newbie but my list is gradually growing as I learn to find seeds. I've been gardening all my life but have seldom collected seeds even from the most obvious ones. Now I'm seeking them out from their hiding places. Great fun!

I'm curious. What part of TX is Hereford? I was surprised to see zone 6b in TX. Just shows my ignorance, I guess.
Pam

Hereford, TX(Zone 7a)

I too have just started collecting seeds. For years I have just gone out and bought plants. Seeds are so much fun, not to mention MUCH cheaper!! :P

Hereford is in the Tx panhandle. About 45mi from Amarillo.

Hereford, TX(Zone 7a)

You have a great selection!

I'll take some of your Blazing Star 'Kobold.

I'll trade you some oriental poppy seeds for some white yarrow.

Rockton, PA

Hey Lebug
I deadheaded some of my goblin and just threw the seedheads on the ground next to the plants. you should see the sprouts! when I saw them I potted those babies up and have about a dozen goblin growing in pots. They are about 3/4" tall with two and four leaves.
Does that sound easy to you?

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Hey all,

Let's see. You asked about how I started my seeds last year Lea. I just pulled up my spread sheet (I was SOOO efficient at documenting....in the beginning.....until planting time when things got insanely busy. LOL!) and I find that with both my winter-sown and inside plantings I covered with about 1/8' of soil. I'm guessing I had about 30% germination but lost a few of the inside seedlings (probably because I started them way too early and had to babysit them way too long) and most of the WS seedlings were lost to a late frost.

Pam, I pinched the seedhead from my neighbor's plant last autumn long after it had stopped blooming. I cannot even state for certain what the parent plant was, but here is a picture I took of my first bloom this summer. It sure looks to me like it came true.

Throwing some of those seeds on the ground does sound easy I'll sure try it but I don't have much luck with plants reseeding other than annuals and all of the ones I don't care if they reseed lol

That bloom looks a lot like blanket flower 'goblin' but I think they have one with more yellow in it too so it might be that one.

I know how those spread sheets and documents get later in the planting time it seems there is never enough time to take care of the seedlings, plant more and put it down in the computer lol I always end up with notes everywhere!

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

Thanks Lala!
I just wanted to be sure I was sending seeds that would be nice for the other newbies. I feel great about it now. Yours is beautiful!
Pam

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you LeBug for the stamps, that was very sweet! Your SASBE went out today w/ seeds!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

We can always use stamps on here can't we? lol Thanks for the seeds!
Lea

(Cathy), MO

Crash do you have any seeds left? I would love to try some.

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Sure cat, I was waiting on katie and Lala too, I haven't heard from anyone but LeBug, just send SASBE and I'd be happy to send you some.
