Hi,
I am sending along a couple of pictures of a problem on one of my plumerias. I thought 1st it was bugs, but I don't think so now. A fungal growth of some kind? I have quite a few plumeria (about 50) and I can only find this on a couple of them. I have actually had pretty good luck with all of my cuttings and my seedlings are in there 2nd yr now.
Any suggestions appreciated.

It looks like roots coming out of the hole is it on a cutting you picked up. Or is it on a seedling or both? I have seen this before Clare will proably know. Helps to have all the information
Sorry I was not more specific. The larger of the growths is on a the trunk about 2 inches above the soil line of this rooted plant that I have had for several years. The smaller one is up higher on the same trunk. You can't see the areas from this shot because they are on the other side of the plant. I pruned it earlier in the year. Pretty strange looking.

Yes, this is actually common in areas with a lot of rain and/or humidity like Hawaii and Florida. Those are indeed roots coming from the cambium. You can cut below the roots and have an instant second tree if you wish. It doesn't hurt anything to leave them alone.

Thank you so much. I would never have guessed that they were roots! I searched several sites looking for split bark, growths etc and could not find anything and I wasn't sure I wanted to post a picture of some horrible desease that I had. Happy that I did.
Yes, we do get a lot of rain here - the Garden State.

p.s. if anyone noticed the parking lot in the background - it is my office. I had so many plumeria that I took about 15 to work and put them on the deck. Everyone has really enjoyed them.
the roots look gross coming out of the side like that... like parasitic worms or maggots or something...
Shirley, you are most welcome;-) What a great office you have! You can cut the roots off with clippers if you don't like how it looks. I think it looks kind of interesting, but then again, I like weird things;-)
Smdent, if you got so many of them that you're running ot of room for them at home.. I'd be happy to take a cutting or two off your hands.. :) My little seedlings are just two inches tall right now.. Wish they grew faster..
Id lay it on its side roots down and watch it explode once they developed.
Thats how I root my fig cuttings as logs.
Once the roots take off they explode with growth.
You can do that with the red thai plant too.
Malestrom thanks for the info. To make sure I understand. Another plant has it on a branch that I would be able to cut off easier. It is Scott Pratt. So, I cut the branch off and lay it on its side with the "roots" down in the dirt on the top of a pot? Now?
Also, do you know what will happen to the area that has the roots coming out over winter storage. Will it dry up and leave a hole or just stay that way until spring?

Sooo happy that they aren't.
Thought I would send a picture of the deck at my office. They are really very happy there since it is on the south side of the building.
Yup thats what I meant.
They grow slower at first this way but the root system will be huge.
Theyll do fine as long as they dont get over watered
