First strep seedling to bloom

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My strep seedlings are starting to bloom and here is the first flower to open. A few others have buds and I can't wait to see what they will be. I decided to number them in order of blooming, so No.1 has been labeled with the color noted.

Oh My .... That is Beautiful! I really love those variegated leaves too. Someday I may try to grow a Strep or two again, but my first experience this year was not the best. I'm not sure what I did wrong. I had one decent sized 'Dilby's Gwen' that did real well for a quite a few months and 3 teeny ones I got in trades that were struggling. Then I left town for 8 days and when I came home they were dead. The small resevoir's had run dry and hubby didn't water them .... my fault, I told him everything inside was fine, to only water the outside plants!

Does that blooming one have a name? It sure is pretty.

Gorgeous! I'm talking about the foliage (again :))) but the bloom just adds to it!! I just can't imagine the satisfaction of having grown from babies to a bloom!!
I'm hoping to though :)))

Yes, my way too crowded nursery. Today if I have time, I'm going to spread them out in another sweater box.

I did grow them from seed, Jan. This was such a fun project filled with surprises.

Lin, no the one blooming doesn't have a name, just a number for now ( No.1 ).

Bemedel - you do so well growing from seed, I know you will have blooming strep seedlings of your own.

Susan - thank you

mrsbonnie - I love streps but the variegated ones as you say are pretty even when not in bloom.

Look at all those little babies, Gail! You did good!

I recall admiring Snowrose's babies from that first thread update... because I remember being taken aback by the one that has the heavy variegation. Very pretty

Don't know why I like variegation so much... I have many plants in my "collection" that are variegated.

Hats off to both of you!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh no, I am the novice still trying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Snow knows hers are going to grow..........mine is always a guess!!!!!!!!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thank you Va_Wild_Rose! While I am writing to you, I want to thank you for your service as an EMT. I think they are at the top of the social ladder saving lives everyday.

Gail...your seedlings look wonderful and healthy! You are doing great with them.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

well, I still can't catch the pods in time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was waiting patiently for the right time and grabbed two yesterday,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,they were empty..............already opened...........going back there to check some more pods.................

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gail, when the pods are ready, they look brownish and are just starting to open at the seam ever so slightly.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just haven't gotten the 'hang' of it yet.............makes me 'grrr'..............I have some giant pods on my variegated strep............I just can't miss them this time...............

Snow, when you plant the little strep seedlings in their own container???????? I don't have a clue except i remember yours looked like giant ones when you showed us your little ones in their own pots..............

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Thank you Snowrose!

Awsome Babies! Great Growing!

VAWildRose: I second Snow's comment for your job as an EMT/Medic! Takes a lot of patience and a very special person to do it! I can only imagine what y'all come in contact with every single day on the job, a job where you have to stay cool, calm and collected but also a job with a lot of stress!

I thank all of our men & women in the military for the job they do and also Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMT's/Medics too! You all do not get enough praise!

For quite a few years now, whenever I see a police officer doing radar on our city streets, I will roll down my window and Thank them and tell them I appreciate them being out there! Sometimes they look a bit perplexed for a second and then smile and tell me they appreciate the thanks which they don't get often enough!

So, again .... Thank You for the job you do!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Thank you too, Lin! I was a military wife for over ten years, so my hat is always off to our military men and women, who are going through so much right now, for so little pay.
And what can I say about the Fire/EMS/PD familly? My guys at my dept have been so great and supportive while I go through this ordeal, and so many of them want to see me stay in some capacity... but the city gov't... that's a different story. I just wish I could get beyond all the bureaucratic red tape, and go on with my life now.

But thank you... for the thoughts and support.

Karen: Were you injured on the job? I am not understanding what you say about the ordeal you are going through .... I must have missed another post. If you are injured I certainly hope and pray for a speedy recovery for you. I know what you mean by city gov't. It is a waste of money with all the red tape one has to go through to get something settled sometimes .... in any job. I worked in the Mortgage dept of a Savings & Loan years ago and I never could get over all the VP's and AVP's of this and that ..... and to get something done it had to be in writing and go from one manager to the next in the department and then to one AVP, then to another AVP, before going to the Vice Pres. !!??***!! A lot of wasted time and paperwork.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes Lin, I was injured on the job. On Jan. 9th this year, I was lifting a patient on a backboard and tore all the ligaments in my lower back. I am now disabled, and can never go back to my job as a medic. It's been rough... so far, 8 months of the red tape we speak of, and more yet to come.

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers... they are appreciated.

Karen

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness .... I have had back problems in the past so I feel for you! I will definitely keep you in good thought and prayer and also will keep good thoughts about all the red tape hassle. I know that must be very frustrating!

I like the folliage

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I really do need to get on here more to check out all the threads.Almost missed this.Snow..I just love all those variegated streps.Looks like no 2 leaves are the same. Can't wait to see all the different blooms you get from them.I agree too..the foliage alone is incredible ; )

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It is interesting to look at the seedlings and see that no two are just alike. Some are lightly variegated and some are heavily variegated. A few are solid green. The one first to bloom has a blossom almost identical to the mother plant. I hope there will be a variety of flower colors but will have to wait and see.
