I was pleasantly surprised to find this beauty looking at me when I got home! She is Amaryllis 'Dancing Queen'. I know there is an amaryllis forum, but I wanted to post it here where I know mostly all of yall. It's a shorter scape than normal b/c I was a bad plant mommy. LOL I didn't water regularly this summer.
I KNOW that I'm going to order more bulbs this Fall. As if I have room for them, but since when is that a concern for a plant fiend? LOL
Does anyone here grow Amaryllis as houseplants?
GH
Isn't she pretty?
I always buy two or three to have blooms indoors in the winter. They are fun to watch as they grow so quickly. Your's is very pretty. Lou
GH: That is one Beautiful Amaryllis! I have a few generic ones bought from Wal-Mart that are in pots on my screened deck. Some bloomed late spring/early summer but I haven't had blooms for quite a few months now. I think I should have them back outside in complete sun .... the sun is filtered by the screen on the pool deck and even though it's very hot and sunny, they would get more direct sun if they were in the yard. I'm thinking about planting them all out in the yard maybe in the Spring, but would like to get it done before too long!
That photo of your 'Dancing Queen' looks a lot like one of mine, but I don't remember that name so I'm sure it's just that I have one that looks similar in colors! That flower is huge! Very, very pretty!
It's both fun and amazing to watch them grow. Once the scape emerges, it seems to literally grow several inches every night! I can hardly believe the growth rate.
I recently found out that my step-father orders a slew of bulbs from J. Scheepers every Christmas and then throws them away when they are finished blooming! (((((((((BIG GASP)))))))))))) I said, "You do what?" LOL I begged him to please send the bulbs on to me. Sheesh!!!.
Oh my goodness .... I sure hope from now on he saves them for you! I guess a lot of people do just that, buy things to grow over the holidays and then out they go in the trash with the dead Christmas tree! I have been known to "steal" half dead plants from my sister and BIL in South Florida .... one year I must have brought home 50 impatiens plants that they were pitching because they said it would be too hot in the coming months for them down there!! I told them that if they were planted in shade and had water once or twice a week from the sprinkler's they would be beautiful. They like changing out plants late spring/early summer .... so now I know when to plan my visits! LOL. I planted every one of those wilted impatiens when I got home and within two days they had perked up and were really Gorgeous!!
Thank you both for the compliments!!!!! 'Double Record' is what is known as a double- meaning the flowers are twice as big as normal sized ones. I am really very surprised that it bloomed, and especially at this time of the year. I haven't give my Ams top notch care throughout the summer, but I have been more regimented with feedings than I was last summer. It seems to have made quite a difference. Ams are heavy feeders, so I try to feed 1/4 strength at every watering. Sometimes I just like to leach out all the accumulated salts, so I just use plain old water.
The one to the right is a struggling mini, called Lemon-Lime. It has been small since I got it 2 years ago and has never bloomed again. It produces offsets, but they are very weak and soon die. Oh well, maybe one day it will kick into gear and give me some serious growth and flowers!
What a nice score Lin! LOL You know what they say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." So very true. :)
Gorgeous blossom...
Is that a hoya to the left?
Yes, Snow, it is. :) It's a rather lop-sided, and in my opinion, funny looking DS-70! It hasn't grown that much in the past 2 years. I think it's punishing me for having taken too many cuttings from it. LOL It certainly does not grow as fast the Lacunosa I got this summer. Do you grow DS-70 too?
No, I don't have DS-70. How do you like lacunosa?
Well, considering this is my third try with this plant and it bloomed like a fool all summer long, I LOVE IT! The vines are out of control. They're clambering everywhere! Choking other plants, running around the posts and up the hanger! LOL It's an EA plant and I guess I got lucky and got a well rooted plant rather cuttings stuck in mud!!!
If you don't grow Lacunosa, would you like some cuttings?
Thank you so much for the offer of lacunosa. Raingazer picked one up for me at her local Lowes and is sending it as we speak. I so wanted to try it. I hear the fragrance is very nice. Happy to hear how exuberant yours is growing for you and blooming also.
Snow: You will LOVE the Lacunosa! It is my very favorite Hoya .... the fragrance is heavenly! Last winter I moved some hoya's indoors when it got real cold and I put the Lacunosa in the study ... a small room, but open to the hallway and also the foyer with two arched doorways. That one little plant bloomed and bloomed and the wonderful fragrance got so strong I had to move the plant to the back porch! It was overpowering! It wasn't so much the plant as it was my allergies kicking in! It has been out on my back deck all summer and has been blooming and scenting the deck area with it's wonderful fragrance!
I have a DS-70 that is blooming again and I don't care for the aroma on that one .... not awful but just kinda musty smelling. I have a Hoya compacta (Hindu Rope) Hoya blooming right now too but there's no fragrance that I can detect on it! My Krimson Queen & K. Princess have bloomed many times and no fragrance on those either! H. Brivealata bloomed about a month ago, that one had scent but nothing to write home about either. Maybe that's why I love Lacunosa ... it's the only one I have that smells good!
You're welcome, Snow! Anytime...
Lin...I have a small H. Heuschkeliana that is supposed to smell like vanilla/butter when it blooms. I'm more than sure it will be years before I can attest to that!
I have a rope hoya in my office and you're right, there is no scent associated with that one. The blooms are really pretty though. Nice, round puff balls of flowers.:)
My most recent purchase was a rooted cutting of H. Macrophylla Variegata. I love the large leaf size, texture and variegation on this hoya. It's one of my favorites. One day, with any luck, I'll have a nice specimen!
I am so excited for the hoyas. Where do you get DS-70? Brivealata? Are those EA plants you found? Gessiegail has helped me out for hoyas also. I am thankful to my DG friends.
I can hardly wait to see for myself the fragrance on lacunosa.
My EA DS-70 was purchased at HD. It's probably the most common hoya they stock!
That macrophylla sounds so pretty, GrowHappy. Lucky for you the HDs stock hoyas. Frederick doesn't have much to speak of. Maybe over the course of the next year, I will see some. They are bound to get something besides pothos and ivy which I like but enough is enough of that!
My DS-70 is an EA purchased at HD also. It was mislabeled and someone on the Hoya Forum ID'd it for me.
Our HD's and Lowes get mostly the Potho's and Ivy and Heart Leaf Philo's too ... every once in awhile I find something different, but it's rare that they have any decent plants. Usually in Spring when everyone first begins getting plants in ... but after about a month, it's just the same old, same old stuff that is very common.
Thanks...I will look for any EA hoyas but will be on a quest for the DS-70 now. How about a photo of it?

Looks like something else in PF that needs to all be combined. There are duplicate listings on a couple of these plants.
I will go take a photo of DS-70 and show it in my next post.
Fun to look through those in PF. I like seeing the leaves/plant as well as the flowers since that is what we will live with most of the time. Thanks, Lin.
GH: I am so sorry about hijacking your thread of your Beautiful Amaryllis! I once again forgot where I was .... happens often, begin talking about one plant and then something comes up about another and I get off track! Please forgive me!
Lin
This is one I had blooming in June, don't have a clue as to the name:
Thanks for the photo, Lin. Very nice.
I apologize too, GrowHappy. Seems we took a 180* turn here from your stunning amaryllis. This winter, I will try growing some as I think the blossoms are fabulous.
