PossibleH. lyi

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

There is some discussion going on on some of the other hoya forums as to whether or not this is actually H. lyi if it is or isn't I dont know. All I know is what I bought it as and that's the name that it will have until proven otherwise.

I ordered the plant online this past monday,it got shipped tuesday and I had it on my porch today! Asiatica says that they have not seen this hoya bloom so it'll be inetrsting to see what the flowers will look like when it blooms..sorry I dont know the correct terminology to describe the leaves, yes even after almost 4 years of growing hoyas seriously i'm still learning. I can tell you that the leaves on this hoyas are hard enough to kill somone if you hit them the right way with it!!!

Until proven otherwise, meet the newest hoya baby to become a member of the Elliott family!!! Little hoya lyi!!!

David, here is a herbarium specimen of H. lyi. There are several, all slightly different, but none of them have leaves that look exactly like the Asiatica plant. The type description of lyi says the leaves are "ovate-lanceolate", which describes the leaves in this herbarium sheet pretty well.
Sorry, I'll have to post the sheet in two parts.

This is the lower half of the same sheet.

And this is a different sheet. There is a very slight squaring off on a few of the leaves, but nowhere near as dramatic or consistent as in your plant. Don't ask me about flowers- it's beyond me how anyone can tell from sure comparing these wrinkled hundred-year-old flower mummies to fresh ones!

Oh my! What cute leaves! And, of course, another must have. Very interested to see the flowers too.

heres another pic and as you can see in this one some of the leaves arent as squared off on the ends as others but more oval.

David, is it just one cutting in the pot? Is there any new growth? They advertise as well rooted. I have one on order now...but may change it to something else. It doesn't look like the above drawings, though. I think Chris is supposed to post a pic of what she says is lyi, but even it this isn't, I may get it anyway. Some new plants are going on to the Asiatica website this week, so I am waiting to see what they are first.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I have 2 plants in the pot and yes one of them does have a new vine sprouted which is about 2 1/2 -3 " long and they were rooted but not so well that they could be lifted out of the pot with rootball intact. In fact one came right out of its pot as I was unwrapping the newspaper from around it but that wouldnt stop me from ordering from Asiatica again. Someone has already staked claim to one of them but that person shall remain anonymous!!!

David don't hold your breath waiting for it to bloom. I had my two over a year and no signs of blooms. It is a cutie tho.

I figured as much!!!!! When I first began with hoyas it was the flowers that attracted me the most. Now some of the flower appeal has worn off and I am looking at the uniqueness of some of the foliage. The leaves on this hoyas are like steel!!! I can only imagine what a full basket of it will look like!!!

Funny as I never thought i'd be attracted by the leaves but the longer I grow them the more I am finding myself picking and choosing which hoyas to buy based on the foliage.

How does it grow for you? Asiatica doesnt provide much as far as growing conditions go. Is it a slow, fast or moderate grower, what type of light does it take, does it like to be dry or moist???

David...are the leaves hard like caudata and waymaniae, or hard like kerrii, etc? Or...are they even harder than any of these? I am having trouble imagining what texture you are talking about.

I had my eye on this one too, but I didn't order it as they said it hadn't bloomed and Awanda had told me hers had never bloomed either. I must have read the same discussion you did about it not being H. lyi.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

However.... heh heh heh...if it isn't H. lyi...it has to be H. xxxx? And that to ME is part of the fun. Bloom, damnit!!!!

Very cute plant David! I love the hoyas with the extra thick hard leaves too. I just went to the Asiatica website and holy canoli! They are expensive! :-x

Marcy, I find the leaves on this hoya to be harder than any of the other 3 that you mention and I have all 3 of those. You could cut glass with these leaves!!!

Carol, i'm with you. Regardless of what it is with leaves this interesting I couldnt imagine that the flowers would be any less interesting and as far as getting it to bloom ,I can wait. Out of the hundreds of hoyas that i have currently i've seen less than a dozen bloom so far this year so not seeing this one bloom either wont be such a big disappointment!!!

Wow...that DOES sound interesting. I'll wait to see if it is easy to keep before getting it though as I would hate to spend that kind of money & then loose it.
David....are you sure you have the hoyas in enough light? Mine were being stingy with blooming this year too, but as the summer got hotter and brighter...they eventually started having a few here & there. The ones that bloomed were in very good light (but not direst sun).
One of the things I used for shade and to keep rain off them on the side was that corregated plastic stuff they use for patio roofs that comes in 8 foot lengths.. I got the clear kind that had a darkish tint (called smokey I believe). I cut it in half and put it all along the South side at a big angle from under the eves to the fence so that rain would roll off and they would have some sun protection. The ones under that stuff are the happiest hoyas I have in summer. It seems to defuse the sun just enough so that they still get tons of light, but none burn.
I had several first time bloomers under that.

David...is the one you got from Asiatica the plant for $18?

Hmmmm, that ebay plant is going to get bid out of sight!!!

Carol

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

David, I grow mine in filtered sun, and it seems to really like the high humidity of the greenhouse. I water it about 2 x per week. It's just a really slooooow grower.

Who knows Carol, that plant on eBay might bid way out of sight, but with Asiatica's shipping prices, you could still get a bargain :~) -joanne

OOPS, just checked out the shipping on the above ebay auction...even higher than Asiatica's. Nevermind....

Should be shipped in a little gold plated box for that price!

Philomath, OR

I didn't even know you could recieve plants from out of the country. Look at what David Liddle has to go through as well as the person on our end. -jo

Carol, yes I did get mine from Asiatica.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

The person with this plant on ebay is probably the same person who supplies Asiatica as their plants come out of Thailand.

Whoever wins it I hope they have a lot of money cause I think this one is going to go sky high before it ends!!!

Philomath, OR

David, you do realize that if it goes sky high it's your fault! You post those pictures and make us rearange our 'want lists'! I know I updated mine after reading all the post about this hoya :~)

God bless, -joanne

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I don't know what size the plant is they are sending but 20.00 shipping seems outrageous.

Philomath, OR

It's being shipped from Thailand.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I know but I recently was sent a variegated phal orchid from Hong Kong and the shipping was 10.00

Maybe the ebay plant is a large one?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I just checked the postal rates and they have gone up. So, 20.00 is not unreasonable at all now from Thailand.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I dont know if the seller of this hoya on ebay will require any documentation for it to be shipped or not. I am currently looking at some hoyas in Thailand and it specifies right on the site that an import liscense is required as well as a phyto.

Sorry Joanne!!! I'm the same way. Everytime someone posts a pic of a new flower or plant on here my wish list just gets longer!!! I am dying to get H. globulifera and one way or another I will track one down!!!

dmichael

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Some of the nurseries in thailand have a direct line to the Ag. folks to get a phyto...not difficult. Import Permits are easy to get here.

I would worry about shipping tho.....'can' take a long time.

Carol

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

When you say a long time, just how long are you talking about?? I got my Paul Shirley order in exactly 7 days to the day that he notified me of shipment and the cuttings looked as if he had just cut them and put them in my hands.

I actually spoke on the phone @5:30 am this morning my time 4:30 pm Thailand time inquiring about all of this . I am just waiting to find out how much the hoyas are. The phyto is $10 US with a permit and the green and yellow slips which I have access to.

I am willing to risk loosing the $10 and take a chance on getting these particular hoyas but I am not willing to sacrafice my first born as actual payment for the cuttings themselves!!!!

Soooo David,

Would your first born be lambii Elliott, or is it another hoya that I might want in the event that you DO decide a sacrifice is in order?

:)
