A DGer has asked for lilium bulbs for a trade. She lives in the Northeast.
Is it OK to uproot the bulbs, ship and replant now?
Should I leave on some of the stalk and keep the root ball intact?

OK to plant lilium bulbs in Fall?
Waiting another few weeks before digging might give more energy to the bulb. If my stalks look good, I wait until after a hard frost to cut them back, then you can dig them anytime after that. If your DG trader is in a big hurry, you could do it now though. Still, I wouldn't plant until October, when the ground is cooler.
You can dig the bulb up carefully and separate it from the soil. I soak the bulb in a 10% bleach solution, and then pack in either cedar shavings or peat moss to mail out. They are best planted upon arrival, as lilies are never truly dormant. If they can't be mailed or planted right away, I would place them bagged with the cedar shavings/peat moss in the fridge until it is time to mail and the the same on the other end, until it is time to plant.
I hope this helps.
Excellent.
Thank you!
