Climbing Onion, Sea Onion
Bowiea volubilis

This is my plant in full dormancy by the start of spring. It will not grow again until well after mid-summer.

thats pretty neat. where did you get it? i need one

I purchased it as a baby nearly 30 years ago from my local Cacti and Succulent Society. It has been flowering and setting seed for about 8 years now. They are not difficult to grow as long as you keep them dry while they are dormant. If you cannot find one locally, try a specialist succulent nursery, or look for a trade through DG. Best of Luck, Kaelkitty.

got one at logee's

In this climate in southern California, ours are in leaf year round. Had a solitary plant 3 years ago, and now it's 4 separate ones. This is the plant in September, but it looks like this all year round, though it briefly loses some foliage periodically, but quickly replaces it.

bob- are they hard to care for? do i treat it like my pregnant onion?

Acton, CA(Zone 8b)

We treat ours pretty carelessly... gets watered indiscriminately all summer, and winter it rains now and then... so far nothing has killed it. It does get morning sun, and is in really well draining soil.. .but I would be careful about treating it like a pregnant onion, which in this climate, are impossible to kill, and spread all over. Those I just toss in the yard whereever and they always take... now I have literally hundreds of them, and I am going to have to start tossing them out
