Somehow I recieved a (tomatoe) seed that was really a garden huckleberry. Thats okay because I like to experiment with new plants. I had never seen or heard of a garden huckleberry until I planted my tomatoe and got this plant instead.
I have been looking on the internet for recipes and found some that look promising. Most people said they were good when cooked and sugar added to them.
My question is....Have any of you made a recipe using garden huckleberries? How was it? DM
Garden Huckleberry
Dig,
I don't have a recipe, but I used to raise them and we made pies out of them. Perhaps jam could be made too. One thing about them is to let them get nice and ripe first as they are a bit tart and need ripeness to get nice and juicy. Then thourghly mash the berries. This is very important. Then they will need a good bit of sweetner as they are lip smacking. They will leave you with a purple mouth temporarily.
Be sure you have the huckleberry and not nigjhtshade. Huckleberries have the fruit turned upward while nightshade fruits are smaller and hang downward.
Thanks Indy,
I'am talking about the nightshade garden huckleberry. The other huckleberries grow wild all over in the Mountains here, so I'am familiar with them. DM
Yes. cook w/ sugar. They are nasty raw & somewhat poisonous unripe. You have to leave them on the bush even after they turn black until it's dull black & softer.
