I planted some daffodils a few years ago, but never got them covered with chicken wire or anything like that. Since then the bulbs have sprouted little legs and walked off. I have about 10 of them left. I just bought some more and I am thinking of putting some dayliles in with were the daffodils are at. What can I use to keep the squirrels from taking off with the bulbs? That is until the daylilies I am transplanting there die back some so I can put down the chicken wire.
Daffodils and Daylilies
SueMe - I have a squirrel problem too! What I started doing was throwing raw walnuts and almonds about 10 ft. from my bulbs to distract them. Maybe they'll fill up on the easy to get nuts and leave my bulbs alone. Has worked for about a year! I'm not sure this is the best solution but seems to be working for me! Understand that I am a total novice and it could be something else that is keeping them away from my bulbs!
Just noticed this thread...We use a Hav-a-Hart trap to keep the squirrel population down. They can't seem to resist peanut butter and birdseed mix. Take them far away since they are notorious for finding their way home.
Other ideas (NOT guaranteed to work): You can try the hot pepper flakes and 'deer off' or 'deer scram' and such things in the hole. Sometimes those remedies will work...
Also dig your holes fairly deeply and cover the bulb planting area with leaves and other 'disguises'. And don't plant any tulips because they will draw squirrels from the whole region to your yard...or get a dog...
I don't know, the whole critter-bulbs problem has vexed gardeners for centuries...always a challenge! That's why I appreciate every bulb bloom I see in spring time!! Good luck!
digatunnel--just noticed you live in Pasadena--we moved from there 3 years ago...lived just off Oak Knoll near the Huntington Hotel..miss it a lot but like Cincinnati, too...where do you live??
