Because of our unusually gloomy/rainy summer, I moved my plumerias that are in pots to my front courtyard where they'd get more sun (when it finally appeared). They were doing well and then the rains started again this week. Is there anything I can do to keep them a little drier? I have them potted in Pro-Mix. The ones in back that are in the ground are doing well and blooming sporadically. Potted ones have been a disappointment. It's too late in the season to put these in the ground, or I would.
Too much rain
I'm not sure what Pro-Mix is but I think it is a lot of peat which tends to hold water. That could be your problem right there. Plumerias really need a well-draining mix. I take it that you will be bringing them in for the winter as they cannot survive in the ground in your zone. Rain won't hurt the container ones as long as it drain well.
Thanks Clare....Pro-Mix is just another name for Sunshine Mix. The pots are draining, but the rain is coming down so frequently, that they don't seem to have a chance to really 'drain.' Maybe I'm worrying about them too soon. I thought maybe I should move them somewhere out of the weather...but then they'd also be out of the little bit of sunshine we've had. Appreciate the response.
Sunshine Mix is great so no worries there, and they are draining so that is great. I don't think you have to worry and would keep them out where they will get the most heat and full sun, even if they get rained on quite a bit. You just don't want them sitting in puddles of water. I don't think you will have problems with rot. Winter dormancy, couple with wet/cold, can lead to rot, but you've still got a way to go before cold weather hits.
you could just bring em inside or put em in the garage...
not that it means anything. Mine are outside in the rain and they are doing fine except it isnt sunny enough for them this year.
Thanks all....rain has stopped and all seems well. Next year plumerias go into garden...no pots to worry with.
but then you'll lose them during the winter..
diehrd, I think bigbubbles meant that they'll be planted in the spring and then lifted in the fall. Plumies do so much better when they are plunged;-)
oh ok... that is how mine is too. i thought that bigbubbles meant w/o a pot!
