Yesterday I had 2 birds in my lanai....

I am not an avid birdwatcher by any means.
When I was a little girl I did attempt to save 2 birds. I did not succeed.
Whatever....way off my topic....back to it.
Well yesterday I went to take my dogs out to pee and a bird Flew from behind one of the plants I can't kill.....(cause it's fake...lol) any way this black bird flies out from the very corner of the lanai and crashes into the screen and it did not look very good. It looked like it snapped it's neck. So i called my mom. She cleans for a charity bird rescue. The lady from the bird rescue called me and told me what to do how to pick it up.

The bird was not in good shape. I was startled by another bird flying out from behind the SAME pot!
Because I was scared I stopped and ran inside with out helping this crow. I know I know scared of birds...but I am...... wild ones at least.

Well I am inside and I am looking through the glass and I figure out that the other bird is an owl. A screech owl I would guess. So I am watching it fly into my lanai and my sliding glass doors and then it gets stuck on the very corner of my lanai. And all around that area we have bottle brush trees. And there are loads of birds chirping and calling to each other. There were 2 blue birds and 4 cardinals all in a group chirping to each other on the opposite side of the lanai screens. I think they were going to attack the owl!
Anyway I went out and startled those birds away and finally the little owl sat up on my lantern outside till dark. It stayed for about 12 hours. We went out and came back and the little thing was still there.

OMG, How adorable! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!!!

No problem.....
What I did read up on the screech owl said is that it's a common owl but not commonly SEEN owl.

So I thought maybe some people would like to see the UNcommonly seen Owl.

Last picture is the owl via my cell phone camera.

That's exactly where he sat sleeping for multiple hours.

Could that be a Grackle in the first pic?

What a great day you had and a great story to share. I agree with Pelletory that the first bird looks Gracklish.

It didn't have any irredescent look to it. I believe it was a crow. The lady who does the bird rescue, Arlene, has crows and it looked very much like Arlene's crows. I am definately no bird expert and I wasn't really trying to get that close....Matter a fact I was peeking around the corner at the "crow". LOL
Although the owl was flying into the sliding glass doors! But I think it was just blind 8D

Unless that water pipe is huge it is much too small for a crow. Grackles don't irredess unless the light hits them right. I just uploaded some grackle pics in the daily pic thread. Some do and some don't.

LOL dangitgirl ( peeking around the corner). Many years ago I used to be very afraid of birds but now when they fly close to me I feel so privileged (as long as they don't put their droppings on me). My DH thinks I'm such a dork, I guess he's right, lol.

fchisolm, Wow ya'll are so good!!! The grackle in that picture is EXACTLY what it looked like. The feather variation was exactly like that! Like some brown. I never seem to be amazed by fellow DGers. I love coming here because it's a fountain of knowledge!

Do Grackles eat Owls???? Stupid questions I come up with! LOL

Not a stupid question.

In that page of info I put in the link, under "Cool Facts", the second half of the last sentence (in the first paragraph) it says they will sometimes kill and eat other birds at feeders.

I never knew that before but am not surprised, they seem very aggressive at times. There the only ones my Red-bellied Woodpeckers are afraid of besides Hawks.

I know that doesn't answer your question but their very opportunistic birds and given just the right set of circumstances..... I wouldn't think they would normally eat owls though.

I just could not understand why both of those birds where in my lanai at the same time..... curious.

Perhaps one chased the other in or 1 saw the other inside and went in after them. Maybe they both were seeking asylum from something else.

It is curious; I don't know. :-)

Those birds had seen the owl and were using their warning calls to let other birds know there was a predator in the area. They'll do the same thing if they see a snake, or a cat...
