New hoya purchases

Largo, FL

I purchased four hoyas today from the University of South Florida Botanical Gardens in Tampa. These are good size plants, not cuttings, for $5 each. I purchased Hoya fungii, Hoya polyneura, Hoya cinnamonifolia and Hoya meredithii.
This is Hoya fungii.

Thanks Sara. I've been "lurking" for over a year and occasionally post on the cactus forum. The USF Botanical ardens always has a good selection of healthy hoya plants for very reasonable prices. I purchased a Hoya imperialis there two years ago. It is now running the length of my greenhouse along the ceiling. I have just noticed it setting flower buds for the first time.

OMG - I haven't ever seen an imperialis like that!! Yet another greenhouse grower for me to envy. :) Hoyas and cacti seem to go hand in hand. Unfortunately, as an indoor only grower, I have had to choose, and I am basically down to just hoyas.

Sara,

I had the imperialis growning in a shade house the first year. This April I moved it to the greenhouse and it took off like a weed. I give it lots of water as I read they really grow well if given sufficient moisture. It obviously loves where it is. I have to be patient and see if it continues to set flowers.

Wow, Robin, love that cinnamomfolia, never seen one so full and bushy, mine is mostly 6 mile vines with a leaf every half mile or so...I love it though, it is not the fullest, most conventionally attractive plant but there is just something about it...

That imperialis is impressive as well. Nice selection that you purchased, great prices too! Be prepared for fungii and polynuera to take over! Good luck with them...

Carol,
Thank you for the compliment. Coming from you that is high praise. I frequent your website a lot and envy your property and growing conditions. I've never been to Hawaii but maybe someday . . .

RER,
From what I have read imperialis is native to Bornea and Malaysia. I think it will tolerate temperatures into the 40's but I have never tested it. The heater goes on in my greenhouse at 55-58 degrees. Perhaps someone else could better answer the question of how much cold it will handle.

RER - NO hoyas are native to Russia.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

RER, like Carol says, there are no hoyas found in Russia. However, there are a few that can be found in China and in higher altitudes of tropical areas - those plants (such as the carnosa, the pubicalyx, etc.) can be grown cooler - but certainly not as cold as the climate in Russia.

Great purchases, and your imperialis is just beautiful. Welcome to the forum, and we would love to see more pictures of your GH :) Please....

How great it would be to shop at a botanical garden!!!! Great looking plants and I'm jealous.

TamiF,
Thank you for the compliment. I noticed today that the imperialis has a long peduncle with nine flower buds. I'll shoot some more pictures this weekend and post them.

Susan,
Thank you as well. The USF Gardens shop is small but the have a surprising variety of plants, from tropicals to hoyas to succulents and cactus. I always pay them a visit when I go to the plants shows they have.

Robin, so this will be the first winter out in the GH? Let me know how yours does, as I have already packed mine in for the winter. Keep us updated on the bud. Oh and you better close that vent, looks like it might me trying to escape !! :)

Largo, FL

Tami,
This will actually be the first winter in the greenhouse for the imperialis. It was in what I call my shadehouse, which is an open porch with greenhouse plastic for a roof, before that. And I would always bring the imperialis in if temperatures fell below 50 degrees. I don't let the greenhouse get below 55 degrees during the winter. We've had very mild ones recently. I have not recorded temperatures below 38 for the past three years.

And I will keep you updated on the bud. I was in the greenhouse before I left for work today and found another peduncle with buds on it:) I have to look closely this weekend and see if there are anymore hiding in there.

Wow Robin, I just saw a picture of your ceropegia, what a beauty !!! Looks like there is going to be a fight for ceiling space between the H. imperialis and the ceropegia. Good growing, it is just beautiful. Isn't if fun finding peduncles, makes my day. Hope ya find lots and lots of them :)

San Francisco, CA

Does anyone know where I can buy hoyas in the San Francisco area? That Mrs.Green said there were some people on this forum from San Francisco can they recommend a good hoya outlet for me?
Freddie

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Freddie, or do you prefer Fred? I have sent you a D-mail with some wonderful mail order/ Internet order options for hoyas if you are indeed looking to expand your hoya collection.

I don't know about any hoya sellers in your local area, but if you are willing to receive your hoyas through the mail, you really can't go wrong.

Well, these aren't purchases, but were a wonderful gift from dmichael - H. lambii and H. siarie in front and, in the bag, cuttings of lambii and siarie, as well as H. golamcoiana! Cross your fingers that I get them to root!!!
