No sticky?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

For quite a while now I have been trying to identify the hibs I have in my garden, as well as some that are around the island. I find it strange that there is no sticky at the beginning of this forum with info about how to id the various types of hibiscus. I don't mean down to the cultivar...but just quick identifiers for hardy, tropical, vine, dwarf, etc. Anyone know where I can find a quick reference like this? I love the pictures, but don't have time to go through all 63 pages every time....I am talking a LOT of hibs here!

No , Not really . ( just a joke )
It's just that we have over 300 different kinds here in the land of OZ .
Names don't mean a lot . (except to those who named them )
You need to look at the Pictures I feel .

Shari, considering your location I suspect most of yours would be unnamed species; the ones all the hybrids have been created from. .

I agree with you both! I'm not trying to get real specific....and I have looked at the pictures, over and over until I'm cross-eyed! I am just trying to find an easy way to know if what I am looking at is a hardy (huge flowers), or a tropical (??), or a vine being forced to grow as a potted hib....just basics....I guess I'm just really dumb. I have so many, and they are so different....tis a puzzlement.

IslandShari, one way to tell Tropicals from Hardy Hibiscus is the leaves. The tropicals have shiny slick leaves, the hardy ones have more rough leaves. I don't grow the hardy ones, but the tropicals grow great here in the ground. Hope this helps some. I am not an expert by any means, just a backyard gardener!

Well, in zone 11 aren't they all hardies? LOL The other thing you can do is post them here (we'd all love to see the pictures anyway!). I know that I usually recognize tropical vs hardy when I see them even though I can't describe exactly how I know, and I'm sure a lot of other people are the same way.

Hi Liz! Did you ever find out the name of your double peach? Just curious.
I've been doing a lot of reading on this subject this afternoon, and I'm pretty sure that most of mine are tropicals....rosa-senisis all hybrids of one sort or another...I have 2 schitz's. I recently got a cutting of a gorgeous variegated red that (knock wood) seems to be doing well. Rene - you're right, it seems that the hardy's (too funny Liz!) have larger lobed leaves with a rough texture. And of course the schitz's are easy . So I guess I will just label them with these basics.

Nope, I think we all decided to name it "Pretty"! There was someone else besides you and I who posted it for ID at some point, and nobody's ever had any ideas on any of them, so I think it will forever remain nameless.

I find myself calling mine "darlin", so that is probably what it will stay. Thanks for the replys everyone!
