Begonia Question

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Can I root Begonias from bulb/tuber type, Not the best pic, I just took this a minute ago, I hosted a Co-op & I have some very nice ones here, I would like to keep the bulbs but if I can root them:) I can share, also can you tell me anything about the seed pods? I have been pinching them off, but if they too are easy to propagate maybe I will let a few go to seed. I will be gone today, but will read when I get home,Thanks so much for any help..:)Anita

You are too far north for Begonias, except B. grandis. Replanting tubers sometimes works. They are generally regarded as annuals. My B. grandis seed did not sprout.

I realize I can't keep them outside, what I want to know is if I cut off the growth will it root, I will have to give it a try & see, I have several begonia tubers I have had for a few years,(have LOTS from co-op) I just treat them like my Callas & Cannas, let them die back & store for the winter, maybe someone else knows if the cuttings will take root or not from the tubers..

Thanks :)Anita

I have rooted tuberous begonia cuttings. I cut them off just below a joint then root them in a little water first, then transplant to a pot. I grow them inside under lights over the winter.

I was wondering the same thing ANITA!!! Thanks for asking! I found a couple of mine "eaten" or "broken" by some creature, and thought about rooting them too...one I stuck in some dirt and the other I tossed...I will UN toss it in the morning..lol I love the ones I got from the co-op!

Did you get any of the Sunset ones? They were magnificent!

Those are real nice, Janet! OK, I'm trying to remember exactly what I did , LOL. I think I may have let the cuttings dry for a few hours before putting them in water. Now the water part I do remember! I use shot glasses or suitable glass candle holders for tapers. I kept the water level at no more than a half inch deep, not sticking the whole stem in water. I was afraid it might rot then! Anyhoo, after a couple of weeks I noticed the ends start to flatten out. Weird. It's nice to do this in clear glass so you can see what is going on. Seems like you could root all begonias this way. I suspect smaller cuttings would be best, not a huge chunk:-)

Thanks....I am going to take some cuttings tomorrow and give it a try...I just love these things...and of course I will over winter the bulbs I already have too....I am going to need a whole room in my basement this year for overwijntering! LOL

Hi Janet,
I'm not sure if I got any of the Sunset ones or not? I ended up with 1-2 of each one, but I shared some with my Mom, Yours are beautiful, I really like the picotee ones. Will post a few I did get in a bit..

Those are very pretty Anita...some of mine never bloomed...I put them into the ground (mistake) and the rabbitts or some critters eat them everytime they start to leaf out...lol so I will just dig the tubers and put into pots next time...but I am going to try to root some and will let you know how they do...I love to experiment!

Hi Anita!!!

Yes, you can root them as someone mentioned earlier, water method, with just a bit of h202. My begonia flowers have been fantastic, especially in hanging pots!!! My hardy glads also have impressed me---never saw them before the co-op.
Count "ME" in on your next (LOL) co-op!!!

I've had success with cuttings, with saving the tuber over the winter & even with seeds.
The latter are the hardest way to propagate in my experience.
