I had a Lipstick Plant, but unfortunately, it died this summer. Before that, I had taken some cuttings and placed them in a small vase with water. I've had them sitting on a table, near a window but not getting much light at all. Tonight I was watering my plants and got to the vase of cuttings, seeing that it was completely out of water, but to my surprise, here was this flower bud! All that from some cuttings in water!
Lipstick Plant flower!
what a beautiful healthy plant.............that looks like an arrangement................I think I would be tempted to leave her in the vase............too pretty!
Wow, that really is too pretty! What a wonderful surprise for you too.

Very Nice Candace! I agree with Gessiegail ... it looks like a beautiful arrangement! I think I might have to take some cuttings from one of my Lipstick plants and put them in a vase like that! I love rooting stuff in jars, vases or even glasses. A few months ago we had a rooting jar exchange here on the house plant forum and it was so much fun .... seeing everyone's photo's of their plants rooting in water and sending and receiving jars and vases for our cuttings! Some folks even sent cuttings along with the rooting jars! It is amazing how many different plants will take root and grow in water!
Great Job!
I have a lipstick vine too, not sure which type, the leaves on mine are green with some gold flecking, and get much paler in the bright light. After 2 yrs of very bright light and alot of growth, I got tired of waiting for it to bloom. This summer I stuck it on 4-prond shepherds hook with some pots of petunias and ignored it, only when it rained did it get any water. It is FULL of red flowers right now. I will take a pic, but need to get batteries for the digital...
Thank you all for the compliments! I was so surprised to see that flower bud on those cutted vines. In the pic of the vase, all that cloudy "stuff" in the bottom of the vase is all the roots that have grown from the cuttings. I wasn't sure if Lipstick Plant cuttings would root in water, but I guess they do!
candace, I hope you don't mind me posting here.........but you all have got to see how much rain we have had this summer............now, when you get mushrooms growing in a bougainvillea (a desert plant) you know you have had a lot of rain.................
**this is a hanging basket that drains well???????
