I picked up some small garden mums to switch out some tired flower beds with new color.
I am in East Texas in zone 8b. Is it too hot to put these in the ground right now? They will be in full sun.
I have never planted mums before, but it is my understanding that these will return again next year. Do they only come out in the fall? Or will they have foliage sprouting through the spring and summer?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Garden mums
Mums are a perennial, they will die back in the winter and return next Spring. It's important to keep the stems pinched up until the middle of Summer. When I had mums, I think I quit pinching the stems around the 4th of July. Pinching promotes lots of branching and blooms for a full "grocery store" look. You might want to wait a few weeks before putting them in the ground..wait till temps are out of the 100s.
I'm in Tyler and have mums in the ground. Each fall I put new ones in pots and late fall move to the ground. Each yaer my beds get bigger.
Mine don't die back during the winter. They bloom in the fall and also in the early summer.
Thanks for your responses!
I'm going to get these in the ground this week.
