I planted my Amaryllis bulbs outside this spring and they are beautiful - leafy. I will need to bring them in before the end of Sept. What can I do then to get them blooming this winter? Should I plant them in pots and bring them in to the cooler basement or cut back the green and put them in the refrig?

Amaryllis outside
For the first time last year I didn't put them down for a rest period, just let them go and they flowered again. They've been outside for this summer and I'll repeat the procedure. They're kind of hard to manage witht the big leavles that they developed over the summer but I use tape and sticks to keep them upright and together.
Great. I would like to leave them by the pond, as you said, the leaves are huge outside. As long as they bloom I'll leave them alone.
Thanks for the info.

Kathy, I am sure you can bring them in and not have a resting period, as long as you do not mind "when" they bloom. If you want them to bloom at Christmas or a peticular time, you have to do a bit more...I sw another post on the Amaryllis thread about this, I will see if I can find that one.
I am facing the same dilema...whether to let them bloom on their own time or try to figure out the Christmas, timing...I really enjoy them blooming in the Winter here.
I will see where that post was....be back..
Let them be to bloom as they please. You will get better and more frequent results. Check out the big box stores if you want holiday blooms.
