I collected about 30 bulbs from my A Konjac last year when I put it to bed for the winter...I planted all of them this spring and I am getting some crazy results with the pups. I have 2 different leaf patterns and shapes/colors are different to...Some have skin like a toad with bright greens and whites and some are as dark as the rare Konjac "nitestick". The leaf pattern is my biggest stumper...I have some with the typical branches and some that are nothing but one huge fan looking leaf??? I am absolutely pos that they are all from the same 18 pound mom/bulb. Is this normal? I have googled and found nothing about this. I have several species of morphs but there is no way it could have crossed because they never bloomed at the same times. Crazy! Does anyone have an idea of why this is or if this is normal? I will try to take some pic's of the pups...attached is the mom. Thanks
Amorphophallus Konjac Pups /Question
I really need you to send some to me.... so I can tell for sure what you have...lol 18 lbs???? Wow. Very nice looking parent plant, Tim, look at the size of the stem! The third pic reminds me of an Sauromatum Venosum.... couldn't find anything in DG's PF... but bwilliams will jump in and help... Tim, thanks for posting, this is SO interesting.
Still think you should at least send the dark one to me, they grow better in KS ;)
Yeah they are some pics of Sauromatum vernosum up their. If you want to be technical they are putting sauromatum back in the same group with Typhonium. As soon as I get use to it they will probably switch it back.
The odd blotching on that one konjac maybe mosaic virus I would be a bit careful with it. The virus if it is the virus will spread through the sap or by bugs.
The other pic looks to be a Thialand amorpho species but with out a good look at the stems and possibly a bloom might be impossible to ID>
lol I have plenty if you would like one AuntB...Thanks Bwilliams! I thought the same until I researched it a little and found out that it doesnt have any of the symptoms of mosaic besides the difference of color/variegation. I agree with you on seperating it and have since done so just in case. It is perfectly healthy though??? As far as the pups being Sauromatum vernosum, I dont own any or at least I didnt until now? How would that have happened? Have you seen this before? I will try to get some pics of the stems and post them if it will help. I think I have a pic of the mom's flower around here somewhere that I can post as well. I am also going to post another stumper/question about one that I have no idea what it is. I got it from Thialand and is supposed to be an SPP but??? I havent been able to find out who this guy actally is yet. Thanks for your time and post's.
Wow, pretty impressive. Do you have it in part sun or what?
I've been thinking about this since you first posted your question. I don't currently have any Amorphs but I do have a lot of vegetatively propagated Dracunculus vulgaris plants and their leaves vary in structure a lot as they age - tiny ones can have just a single blunt oval leaflet then they might have 3 lobes or 5 lobes or 7 right on up to the full adult production of 15 or more lobes. I wonder if your pups will resemble their mother more once the tubers get big enough to support the adult leaf form? All you can do is wait and see I guess - label the tubers carefully (especially the variegated one) and see what you get next year and don't forget to take photos for all of us out here because now you've made us curious too! LOL! KK.
PS spontaneous variegation DOES happen in plants, sometimes it can be a benign virus, sometimes it is an environmental trigger and sometimes it is a fixed genetic change which you can propagate. My back lawn surprised me last month by producing several strands of buffalo grass (St Augustine Grass) with white striped leaves - does anyone fancy a green and white striped lawn?

KK, we've not had rain for a few weeks, my lawn is starting to look a patchy brown and green..... I think I like green and white striped better! lol Do keep track w/labels Tim, we ARE all curious. The pic I posted is different from the ones of yours that look the most similiar (pic 2 & 3), they are darker and look thicker to me. Wish we didn't have to wait until next year..... maybe it was some kind of weird cross-pollination orgy thing going on below the soil last year??? LOL
WOW Brian! That is awesome! Must be nice to live somewhere that you can actually plant them in the ground...Someday I will get out of this zone...
Rylaff I have the mom in full sun which isnt as strong up here but the pups are in partial shade. I am surrounded by 4 acres of trees and my areas of full sun are limited so I have to pick and choose who gets the best seat. hehe
Kitty I can only hope that is what it is...I will definately repost when the wake back up from a LONNNNG winter (did I just say that uhhhg). Thanks for your help.
AuntB, bow chicka bow wow...a little cheesy porn music for the plants doing the dirty in the dirt....I did have Jimmy Buffet on all winter so??? lol your a hoot!
Hey bwilliams; I would love to trade with you if you still haze an excess of bulblets this year, I know this is an old thread, but I have some stuff you might be interested in. Drop me a line.
