Nerium Oleander - Propagation via cuttings

Montreal, Canada

Hi,

I recently received two cuttings of a beautiful nerium oleander plant, and I have decided to use two methods to start them:

1. potted in regular soil, covered with a plastic to maintain humidity (no rooting hormone)
2. emerged in water

For both cuttings, I cut back the leaves to 1/2 inch, as per research via the Internet. I am curious to know which method is the best, fastest, etc.

Please share lessons learned in this regard.

Mine I put in vermiculite under a mist system. I have rooted them in water but they take quite a while. In soil unless the soil is sterile it may rot due to bacteria. :-)

Thank you so much for the response. Apparently to prevent bacteria, one has to aerate the plant every now and then. As for the cutting in the water, they recommend changing the water at least twice weekly.

Hi,
I remove all the leaves and leave them in water in a colored glass bottle.Make sure that at least 2 leafnodes are in water. Mine root in less than one week.Ofcourse our temps in house are over 80degs here which helps them to root really fast.

Lovetropics - I did not removed all the leaves. I was "advised" to just cut back the leaves to about 1/4 of an inch. I have it in water in my greenhouse, where it gets pretty warm during the day. I was wondering how often you change the water.

Thanks

Hi,
I don't change water since they root really fast. Otherwise, once a week should be fine. If I see that the leaves are growing but not the roots--then I snipp the leaves off since you want the energy of the cutting to go into root production but not the leaf production. good luck.

I am crossing my fingers! I have yet to see roots or leaf growth! Yikes!

I wish you good luck. Do you know the color of the flowers by any chance?

Yes, they are red - a beautiful burgundy

that is a very beautiful color. I hope your cuttings make it.

I start mine in water. I got a large cutting from a friend on Saltspring Island years ago. It's to the top of the conservatory now, well, it's on the deck for the summer but will go back in the conservatory before the end of October. It flowers all the time. I fertilize it the same as I fertilize the brugs.

Brugcrazy - I was wondering how long it took to root. I have had mine in water for over a week. Also, in colder zones such as Montreal, any suggestings on how I can overwinter my babies without losing them.

Many thanks...

It took a couple of weeks to root indoors. Mine spends the winter in the conservatory.
