Any one have gowing tips on growing hardy pink hibiscus.....

Tampa, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm in Zone 9b.... I don't know exactly how i am suppose to grow my new bare root hibiscus plant.... I have mixed up some peat and potting soil and I tossed in a bit of sand for good measure.... I put some kind of hair thing at the bottom and lined the top with compost..... If this is bad let me know.....

"Rookie!"
Also since it is still very small do I put it in bright light or

It should be fine in the pot with the mix you have, I would think. I have a couple of hardy hibsicus in pots and they're pretty easy care. I use a regular, well draining potting mix.
Full sun up to half a day of shade is good in my experience.
Is there a reason you don't have it in the ground?

Yeah I just received it in the mail. I thought probably a good idea to start it off in a pot and keep a close eye on it till it appears to be growing stronger.

Eventually it will grow to have dinner plate size blooms....!!

Looking at your photo that mix looks a little heavy and wet to me. Most of the hardy hibs prefer a wetter mix but I sort of think a good quality potting mix that you can get at any big box or nursery might be better for it. If the soil is too heavy the roots cannot get any oxygen.
Keeping it in a pot until it is established is a good idea.
Good luck, that certainly is a big, beautiful flower.

I root a lot of the hardy hibiscus every year, for friends. Use potting soil, perlite to keep soil loose. Keep potted and protected from really hot sun, water as needed, not too wet, they bloom in pot, sometimes bloom is bigger than the pot. In September as weather cools down and nights are moist & dew on ground, put out in the ground in bed which gets full sun rest of year. Try to protect with mulch first year, while it is still small.

Nice one you have! Much luck!

Ardesia, In the picture it is wet. I just watered it like 30 seconds before. It was quite dry...... It is just moist now not wet. I was scared it would not be okay because it was in the mail. I have never bought a mail order plant before.

Hibiscus, I agree on the perlite.... I used sand to make for good drainage because I am out of perlite and the husband has my car while his truck was getting repaired.

I have since added perlite to the mix and now it doesn't look so moist.

It may lose its leaves but don't worry. The top should perk up soon.

Looking good right??? Yay!!! I took off the bottom two leaves where they were yellow and really sagging. The perlite and superthrive have worked wonders! I love superthrive! Can't wait to get a bud!!!

So I am looking at the picture real good and it appears that the flower she's holding is 2 or 3..... I can see a second pistil and stamens on the left side (from our left not hers)

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It does look that way, but even the one flower that you can see all of is still pretty big!
