Basicly I have a line of 6, 30-40 ft pines trees with 8-10 ft camellias in between the pines. I also have some hydrangas placed in the darkest areas which works well where I am. Next year I'm thinking of planting Brugmansias somewhere around all this and the best place would get sun from sunrise to about 11 AM then again in late afternoon to dark. The line of pine trees runs directly east to west so they block out the midday sun.
Will this work? I have spots that get full sun and seeds from trades so one way or another I will have Brugmansias next year I just think it would look good with the pine, camellia, hydranga combo. Throw some confederate roses in there and I'll have something blooming almost all the time.
How much shade can Brugmansias take?
In my opinion they need about 6 hours a day min in order to bloom. I have brugs in full shade that are growing slowly but they are not happy.
I think it depends on the cultivar and climate too. I've got Isabella in a spot where she gets sun from early morning until about 1:00 - 2:00, and then it is in shade. She thrives there, compared to being in full sun all day.
I'm in a hot climate, 90 for months at a time and the sun is very strong durning the summer. I have more problems with plants burning up then getting to much shade for the most part. It's like the hydrangeas, I have to grow those in almost total shade or they will burn up. I traded for seeds so I'm not really sure what types I have exactly. Looks like I'll hope for many seeds to germinate and plant them in various spots and see what happens. I can always give away some if I end up with to many.
I'm in the same situation as you CoreHHI... full sun here will roast anything. I have some brugs that can't seem to stand any direct sun.. Then the bulk of my stock gets full sunrise sun till 1pm and then full shade. I think morning sun till 11 then filtered shade or even full shade and a peek before bedtime would be fine.. That early morning sun is the best.
I have some brugs growing in full shade.. they are growing fine.. but not blooming.. which is no biggie cause it was 104 degrees today.. I'm lucky anything is blooming!
That was the answer I was hoping for. I'm to close to the ocean to go over 100 but we get real close. LOL. They'll be in filtered shade under the pines durning the middle of the day, the pines aren't that dense and the limbs have fallen off from the ground to about 15ft up so It's not like I'm trying to plant them in a pine forest. Time will tell. That's the fun part about seeds. They don't cost much or postage so if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. The bad part is it takes a couple of year to figure out if you were right.
Wow.. sounds like a perfect location.. Pines and close to the ocean? Oh yeah.. My kind of place! I need to be closer to the coast.. It was 108 yesterday.. I'm wilting. LOL
