Too many hummingbirds

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

This morning I was looking out of window to back yard. I have 5 feeders hanging under back patio. I see like huge bee swamping around in the air under back patio. I went and took a close up. Wow.. about over 25 humminbirds was flying all over the patio! I only took few pictures trying to capture several hummings on feeders. I wish I can capture all in one pic. I couldn't ! You know how fast they fly!

I know this feeder is almost empty.. I just made the fresh nectar for them. Wait for it to get cool off then I can pour in 7 feeders ( 2 in front patio and 5 in back patio)!

Nice photos. I wish I would get that many hummers at once!!

Good pictures. That's alot of hummers. : )

What kind of feeder is that. It looks like it might be easy to clean. Mine is a headache.

OH WOW> I feel lucky that I saw one this year, I think due to the fact it is extremly hot they have not been around.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I got it from Lowes. The red bottom is kinda hard to clean. The bottom won't take it apart. For the glass part, I put dry rice in it and put water it and shake it and pour water/rice out. Dry rice did the job! LOL

The first pix of feeder, very cheap at walmart.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try some rice. : ) My glass part has a small opening to put the water in...about the size of a 2 liter coke top. Getting my wire brush in there is hard, but when I do, I still can't get right under the opening very good. My red bottom part comes apart, so it's not that hard.

Oh well, maybe someone will design one that is easy to clean. : )

Such great pictures. Love seeing them sit still. And so many at one time. I have been in places, usually up in the mountains, at peoples houses where there were hummers like that all over the place. It just amazed me. It has never happened here and I don't think will ever happen here. Too hot. I guess they like the altitude and the cool of the mountains, don't know. But you are so lucky to have that many. I finally have one that visits my feeders every day and I get a glance of him for about 20 seconds each day and feel blessed with that. You are truly blessed and again really wonderful pictures. So clear even with them moving. They are the cutest little things. Thanks so much for sharing those.

Wow, we NEVER have so many hummingbirds at once! Ours fight each other off and there's no more than one eating at a time. How on earth do you folks with so many hummingbirds do it? I'm sooo jealous. LOL

Have you tried taking shots with flash? It doesn't scare them.

I've been getting the large plastic 1 quart ones from WalMart and they are working out great. They're pretty easy to clean, wide mouths and the bottoms slide apart for easy cleaning of the ports. I still have a problem keeping them filled, though. We have about 25 hummies fighting over them every day, sometimes they share but a lot of times one will stand guard over it and chase the others away.....

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I was inside the house when I took pictures.. I don't want to scare them away while they all eat once together on one feeder. This morning around 6:45am. there was about 10 on one feeder, fighing over 4 holes! LOL..

Right now, each hummingbird on each feeder...trying to fight other away from feeder LOL. I mean I have 7 feeders so each hummer sit next to the feeder to protect from others. Cute.

That's amazing!! Are they all Ruby Throats, or do you have Roufus as well?

Last night I was looking out the window to see two duke it out over one of the feeders, then the lantana, and then the butterfly bushes, and this went on forever!! Had I gone outside, I would have needed a hardhat!!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

yes, they are Ruby Throat.. That's only we have here in LA. Wish I have other colors of hummers here!

I bought one of these HummZinger "Excel" from Foster and Smith. The red top snaps off and it is a dish, easy to wash out. It has six ports and a built in ant moat!

I have the Hummzinger also - VERY easy to clean & usually has multiple hummers feeding at once. I will be getting more of these - it's a pleasure to have one that is not a pain to deal with.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I almost gave up on it at first when the hummers kept going to my old one. But finally I took it in for a couple days and now they go to the new one more. They didn't like change I guess. LOL! It doesn't have the familiar yellow flowers around the holes is all I can figure. But they got over that.
I never have more that three, and they sure don't drink together. They are too busy dive bombing each other and buzzing me.
Great pictures you have of your group MiniS!

Thank you! I was inside the house and took pix with my camera with best zoom len, that's how I captured many hummers once at the feeder. Beautifully. Tomorrow, I will take more pictures and post.

Yesterday I filled one feeder that was on the door. It already empty. I filled it again today! My cats Jewel and Mimi enjoyed watching them from indoor. LOL..

Ah, what a pretty cat. : ) I had a cat named Mimi. too. She passed away in May, at age 18. Love the pictures.

Love the pic of your cat watching the hummer. That is great. I also have a hummzinger and love it. I only have four openings though but since I only have one hummer that comes around I guess that will do. He seems to like it. I have two feeders almost side by side and he always goes to the hummzinger. And it is a pleasure to clean that is for sure. I sure wish I could get more than one at a time. That would be so cool.
