This is the most frustrating brug I've ever grown.... I have yet to see a bloom... 5 times I've had buds get near full size and plop... on the ground..
what's the use of a triple or quad if it never opens? I'm gonna talk bad to it..
I wanna give up on this one
Here's an idea that usually works. Put a bottle of Roundup next to the plant and threaten it. It seems to get them to snap out of it and behave. :)
I know your frustration, I have a cross that keeps setting buds and losing them too, and it just seems like its too much to ask to get it to bloom just once.
Ugh, how heartbreaking!! I hope that doesn't happen to me ... grrrr ...
I have the same problem but I always thought it was because I have soooooo many ants and little black bugs that live in the plant. I would love to also get seeds but none have developed. What can I use to spray my Brugs and get rid of the bugs?
Do you know the name of this brug? Some just never wanted to follow through for me and after 3-4 yrs. of never seeing full term blooms, I tossed them. Has it been extremely hot there?
Anaid/Tx:
Avid and Forbid are very expensive to get rid of all mites etc. But they really do the job. If someone would go in with you to buy it/split cost etc. would be great.
Thankz all... it is EDW x EP and we have a couple of weeks of temps in the 80's then we bounce back to high 90's and triple digits.. so that's one thing.. Another thing is the caterpillars.. they are so tiny and make a tiny hole in the bud and go try to live in there... then the bud rots and falls off. I spray with BT every week, but the lil buggars sneak by...
I don't think it's the plant.. just a bad year for heat and cats... and who knows what else is eating them..
I should focus on the positive and that is.. the plant keeps producing buds!! Geez.. I complain too much sometimes. :)
Thank you all for the support!
I've noticed that both seedlings and plants carrying double and triple genes have a difficult time setting blooms in Summer.
I've also noticed that they seem to do either better or worse the second season. If better, they're a keeper - if not, out they go.
As we begin to see new hybrids come of the American-Euro crosses, I believe we're going to need lots of patience and copious notes regarding their performance.
These plants need time to find themselves...
DON'T TOSS IT! It *could* be the first tripple-purple! :D
Well, probably not, but it could very well be something awesome, but you'll never know if you toss it...
Plus you know, you might have to wait a whole 'nother year before you see what it will be at maturity...darn patients...giggle
It just might end up being a double pink. I'd keep it for a while longer.
Much luck!
It's safe for now cause it's in the ground.. LOL It's just frustrating.. 4 skirts?.. I feel like I won the lottery and can't have the money!
Holy moly did ya say 4 skirts! Cool!!! I had those little green caterpillars this spring that would make a pin size hole in the brug buds and eat away. I would find dropped buds, open them and they would be full of cat poo!! Yuck. I was wondering then if the moth poked a hole in them and laid the eggs through the hole or if the actual worm did it. These holes were exactly pin size! Hope she holds the next buds for ya.
Told ya! (see above) LOL
BUT... be careful what you wish for.. first blooms in triple digits are soooo scary they are ugly as sin..
I think there is only one more skirt to go..I can't see inside very good..it's so papery thin and floppy, and melted into itself.. the poor thing is really struggling..
Maybe it's the heat making it struggle?
yeah.. sure is.. that's why I say.. what out what you wish for! If these blooms are gonna have that hard of a time, it's better to just wait... I feel bad for it.. it's horrid.. LOL
It's supposed to start cooling down, and you'll get a better flush.
Did you get that HOT wind on Thursday? It was like a huge hair dryer was stuck on high and hot, for several hours, really screwed up my gardens...
ARGGHH! Save the poor thing! Can you build a little tent for it, to keep it a bit cooler????
LOL Teresa! I put a mister on it yesterday...
Hey lady.. out with it.. what's goin on with your bud?????? I showed you mine.. LOL
Well, nothing's really going on yet, I just went out and snapped a couple and they're blurry! She's still around 6 & 1/2 inches long, but you can see that the flower is almost at the end of the bud.
I can't wait!!!! It should be any day now. I'm thinking maybe on Monday.
Edited to make it sound a bit more like English

Oh my GAWD... that is such a fatty.. I love it.. both of em! Are they doubles? Wow.. now I'm goin nutz again... :-) Great pic of that first one, even if it's a little fuzzy.. I love seeing through like that.. too fun. are you sleepin okay? LOL
I'm sleeping fine, from 11pm to 12am and then from 12:15 to 1:30 then from 1:45 to 2 and then from 2:15 to 3 -- you get the picture!
These are both Miss Caylie x Genevieve. Miss Caylie being a pink one with nice tendrils and Genevieve is a double white. I'm crossing my fingers, eyes and toes for a double pink, but you just never know.
I'm SOOO excited about these, that I bet I will be terminally disappointed.
All's well, cuz my Jean Pasco has several blooms!
Thud
I'm okay... LOL Just got a little light headed at the site of those tendrils.. I crack me up.
Yes, Teresa.. I can see em and I swear I can feel them! LOL How did you manage a pic like that? That is tooo cool.
I hope you didn't hurt yourself! LOL
I took the ultrasound around 7ish, when the fading sun was behind it.
I'm really curious as to what's in there!
OMG! That is SOOOO cool! She's trying so hard to please you!
Cut the poor girl some slack.
I have to take morning shots to get the sun behind them... I have East exposure. I love that pic.. that is great. I sure hope you get color.. that would be so fun..
You know how I noticed this one opening? There were 2 white tips curling out the end of the bud.. but the calyx had burned to clear and it was sealed shut.. I tore that little "pleat" off the end.. It came out FAST after that.
What kind of temps are you having? I hope it's not hot like here!
Oh gosh, no! We are having WAY below normal temps at this time. Ummmm.... around 68 to 70 F. That's bad, but good for the brugs, I guess.
I like her now.. I'll be nice to her.. She just got a Neem (Fruit & Nut tree spray) bath tonight.. I don't care if I forfeit buds for doing it in this heat.. I don't want the spider mites to take over the jungle.. they are trying to sneak in.. What I sprayed yesterday didn't look any better, but what I didn't spray looked really bad! I wanted to wait till Sept to use Forbid the 3rd time, cause that's all she wrote for this crop this year... Now I'm just waiting for the triple digits to end!
I'm so jazzed about your bud I think of it all the time! LOL Virtual Bud Reality.. LOL
Awwww. I'm glad that you've come to terms with your cutie pie! She's just trying to make you happy.
WOW! She's lovely ! I'm glad that she made you happy. It's exciting, isn't it? I hope that you're gaining the upper hand with the mites. They can be pretty disheartening.
I keep constant watch on my bud, hoping not to miss the grand opening. ;-)
This year (knock on wood) I haven't had even what would be considered a "problem" with mites.. I spent the money and got Forbid.. it was WELL worth it.. it may be the season, or it may be the Forbid.. but this year was NOTHING compared to last year and the 3 month fight with broadmites.. eeew!
My biggest problem this year is cats... I can't spray enough BT to get ahead of them! I've had them burrow into the trunks and competely top a brug.. and they get into buds and try to grow up inside so the bud ends up rotted. I spray new growth every week and they still find the buds!
Howz the baby coming? I'm so scared to ask... LOL
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh - pretty!!!!
The baby hasn't really done much since this morning.
I'll post another pic when I get home from work tomorrow.
I keep staring at her... wondering what she'll be like.
