do wrens use old nests?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I have a new bird to my yard - I think it's a Carolina wren, but it is so quick I don't get a good look or pic. It does have the white eyebrow. It looks like it is using an old squirrels nest in the top of a pine tree. It's song sounds so pretty.
Hope it keeps coming back.

Your right its a Carolina Wren. The white eyebrow is their mark. I think we talked about this before (their nest) and the answer was yes. Their very famous for making nests in the oddest places; barbeque grills, a boot left outside etc. etc. An old squirrels nest certainly wouldn't be out of the question for them Really entertaining little birds with a lot of spunk.

While I was visiting a garden featuring ponds a few years ago, I looked up at a wood duck house they had, high on a pole. To my amazement, a house wren had made it home. I always wondered if the babies had a hard time getting out of the nest box when the time came, since the bottom had to be about 20 inches from the hole. But upon rethinking this, I think maybe the wrens filled up the box with twigs to make the nest at the right level. They are characters.
