growing under magnolia

Wichita Falls, TX

I've got a beautiful old magnolia in a corner bed. I've trimmed the lower branches for more sun. Yet NOTHING will grow there except Persian Shield. I've tried hostas, ferns, coleus (yes, coleus) and nothing will grow. Does anyone have any ideas?

Magnolias have roots near the surface, and it is very hard to grow anything under them. It will be better for the Magnolia if you leave that area bare. Mulch to control weeds.... They'll grow under anything!

In addition to having "roots near the surface", magnolias cast a heavy shadow making it almost impossible for anything to grow. If you would still like to have something growing under it,after you mulch, try placing a few potted plants near the crown's edge. Don't place too many or you will cut down the oxygen supply to the magnolia.

Tutroy, I hope you know how blessed you are to have that Magnolia and that Live Oak you mentioned that's tearing up your sidewalk. What I woudn't do for some nice big trees like those. All I have is hackberry trees other than the saplings I planted last year. Oh, and a 5yr old Cottonwood. I hope you get everything worked out, so you can enjoy those marvelous trees.

I agree with Broncbuster, a big beautiful tree is a blessing indeed.

Tutroy, I have variegated Liriope under mine and they do well. Those plants can take a lot of abuse and still look pretty.
