sorry i didn't have time to take pics... I have an amorph. Titanum that was putting out a bug beautiful new stalk and all of the sudden just today it the outer covering was turnung brown and becoming mushy. so i tried to take off the infrected part of the layer just to reveal the whole stalk on the inside was brown and mushy. WHAT IS THIS??? i have had it happen to a couple of my Alocasia but none of my Amorphs. Is this a fungus that i can kill? please tell me someone else has had this problem too.
Thanks,
Rita
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
Have you have a lot of rain? Sounds like rot.
I agree with the first answer...I have 2 titanums and can tell you the only water they EVER get is an occasional mist. These like it hot and dry. The good news is that it might bounce back if you get it out of the soggy pot asap and into fresh "moist" at best soil.
Brown and mushy almost always indicates rot... I hate brown and mushy. I hope you are able to rescue it. You aren't the only one, Rita, so sorry you're having problems. Let us know what you find when you lift it, I hope it's not too late.
I figured it out!! ... and i feel some what stupid; there is a good and bad side to the story. The bad, is that it was my fault the stem died. As it was emerging i got too anxious to see how big it was so i tore off the top of the outer covering to see inside but i didn't realize that water would get inside when I watered my plants, and thats how i ended up with the case of rotten stem. On the other hand it is already putting out another stem :), I'll post a pic when it is done. Moral of the story>>> Paitence IS a vertue.
LOL Rita, I think it's all good. Your morph is okay and you got a lesson in patience... something we plant nuts seem to have to learn over and over.. honestly, I was afraid the whole thing was rotten... I'm so glad there's a happy ending :) Thanks for closure on the rotten stem. Please do post a pic of it when it's done, I'd love to see it.
placeniciarita, I had one KONJAC that i watered too much and it turned to mush. Then i had another one that completely by fire ants.they eat all of the blub and had their nest in the stem, it happend so fast! I repotted my Amorph. Titanum to check for any ants, none found YEA. I made a rain coat for it to help from over watering it. Did your plant recover from the BB gun wound from next door? jerry
Yes, the plant what was wounded in action, is doing great! it still has a BIG whole in the stem but it doesn't seem to phase it. This fire ant issue is worrying me though, I have several rare species of amorph. and several species of ants... I think I will spread some more ant killer today!
I think Diametrious Earth is a good ant deterrant/killer, I've been wanting to get some for the regular black ants we have around here, but haven't done it yet. Not sure about the fire ants... as I understand the particles have sharp micro edges that cuts into their exoskeleton or something. Might be worth googling..
AuntB, It does'nt kill or even slow down FIRE ANTS. Only thing i've found good is Seven dust, but with EE'S in pots and watering every day it just washes out thru the pots, then they come right back! Everthing thing i"ve used just moves them from one area to another. Does any body remember the 1950s -60s movie " THEM" Texas FIRE ANTS are getting almost that bad! jerry
I wondered if fire ants were ammune to it. I guess I'll still try it for my black ones, I need to do something to get them out of my pots. I don't remember that movie, I do remember a documentary I watched years ago, they said they would soon be all over the nation, I think that's probably happening, I ran into some in Arkansas a couple years ago... my poor DS sat down on a stump at a little roadside rest area, luckily just a couple bites... (she sure was hopping around, poor thing). I have some Sevin, granules, shall I use it IN my pots?
