Abnormal leaves

Medford, NJ

Anyone know what causes this? I have it on a few different hoyas, seems to be worse on this one, though the majority of the plant is fine.

Sometimes, for me...it just happens.

Sometimes it is the beginning of a nutrient deficiency showing up. Wait for the next set of leaves.

Sometimes it is Broad Mites....check the newgrowth terminal ends.

Sometimes, it just happens.

mites?? yikes - where are new growth terminal ends? Are you just referring to the vine tips, cause they look ok.. In fact, the whole plant is robust, full of buds and new vines, and incredibly healthy. It seems that here and there will be the deformed leaves, and then the next set (or next 20 sets in this case, its a big plant) are fine....and all of the new growth looks very healthy.

I think 'it just happens'...kinda like a bad hair day. The forming leaf can get a bug bite, or not be formed correctly or something and it comes out all whopperjod. No worries.

I am still having trouble with close ups on my camera, most of my flower pics come out really fuzzy, I had to take about 6 to get the clear flower pic in the last post...but look how great this single photo I took of some creepy crawly insect eggs on a kentiana leaf came out??? Go figure!

Does anyone know what kind of bug laid these? I have the pic in the Bug ID forum (what a creepy place) and no one seems to know...

I don't know what kind of insect eggs you have, but hats off for a great photo. It is really cool. Maybe you should pull off the leaf and put it in a jar to see what hatches. Then if you wanted to grow them up you could cut of the deformed leaves from various plants and feed them to the larvae.

Boy, that is a unique shot. If I were you, I would get them off the plant, and outta the garden before they hatch. It may be some kind of butterfly or moth that EATS what the eggs hatch on. In fact that is usually where bugs lay the eggs and why. If all those little catapillers or whatever start eating all your hoya leaves...you are not gonna be happy. Ha.

The eggs are brown today... probably when I took the pic they were brand new, fresh...I think it is some kind of moth, but will probably remove the leaf, as much as I hate to. For some strange reason, my kentiana is the slowest growing hoya I have, or at least almost as slow as kerri. It wasn't that healthy when I got it, but it has been well over a year now and the darn thing still hasn't done much.

As suggested, maybe today I will remove the leaf and put it in a jar, my nieces should get a kick out of it. Now I just wish I knew what I did when taking that photo that the detail is so great!

I would take that leaf off NOW and put it in a jar...or you may find more eggs all over your plants...or an invasion of caterpillers eating your hoyas or.....

Medford, NJ

I scraped them off onto the grass, even if they hatched it would just be a bunch of larvae and I would have to keep them for a long time to figure out what they were....and I have enough "pets" right now!

Yikes!

Looking at that photo closely, the patterns of the egg laying are fascinating....how the 'mother' followed a pattern....I will see if I can get an id on it from a friend...a bugologist!

I actually felt kind of bad scraping them off the leaf, after all the work Mama ?? went thru - that was ALOT of eggs. But I figure she didn't stick around to protect them, and is none the wiser. My backyard could do with a few less moths anyway....
