What's on the cordyline?

West Orange, NJ(Zone 6a)

One of the cordylines (all are outside for the summer), Baby Bronze, has lots of little white things along stem where the leaves join the main stem. The plant itself looks healthy. What could the white stuff be, and why only on 1 of the more than a dozen types of cordylines? Yesterday I sprayed them all with a mix of cinnamon oil, baby shampoo, and water that I bought from repotme.com. Should I go for the insecticidal soap?

Can you post a picture? There are some whitish wooly aphids, if that's what it is then the stuff you already sprayed should work, or if it doesn't then insecticidal soap should do the trick. I think there are also some types of scale that are whitish and those are harder to get rid of. Could also be mealybugs, I've never gotten mealies on outdoor plants but I suppose it's possible. Q-tip with alcohol is the way to go with them.

I have the same thing, on the same plant........ I guess they are just more attractive. I used the insecticidial soap and will report on results.

Could be white mealy bugs, they leave their eggs in a white cottony fluff.

IMCanadian, not fluffy though. Hetty, it's the ti you gave me that has it. I couldn't find my Safer Soap to zap so started with what I found.

How intriguing that they should both have it so far apart!

Hetty, it had it a little last winter. I thought it was due to coming up from FL and having to live inside in NJ. I got rid of it either with Safer's or with Bonide's sulfur powder (forgot what I was using last winter). Really thought I got rid of all of it. No other ti picked it up. No other ti outside has it. I want to get rid of it before bringing everything in next month. The ti look great. And you'd think the outdoor spiders would eat whatever it is! That's why I normally leave the plants outside alone if I can. So the natural predators can do their thing.
