really nice, I'm curious to find out what it is too. I've never seen that kind here

I have a hard time with the Fritillarys, but going to guess a Great Spangled Frit.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep Rox, I think so too... GSFrit... Very close resemblence to Aphrodite Frit.

Here's all the PA butterflies to compare. Holly, you may want to bookmark this one to use next time you see a new one.

Beautiful picture!!

Thank you both. I've had a Butterfly bush for years and always kept a couple of pots of Lantana. But this year we've added more plants specifically for butterflies. I'm seeing a few different ones than I've noticed before or else I'm just noticing them more.
Here is one of the Swallowtails.

I've noticed the same butterfly for the first time in my yard this year. Was also very curious. Here's a picture of mine. I think it is indeed a Great Spangled Fritillary.

From that list you can click on Variegated, Spangled and Aphrodite and study the differences.. I sure love all of them. GF is the only one I've raised so far.

Thanks Deb, I could tell by your post that there should have been a link. So I did a Pa butterfly search and came up with just that site. I planted Scarlet Milkweed seeds this year and have been noticing a few different types of fluttery wings out there.

Thanks Deb for setting me straight. After reading the "species detail" I'm kind of surprised I have any here at all. I have very few of the plants that they like growing in my yard. I usually grow a row of Zinnias down one side of our large (50x100ft) vegetable garden. It attracts many butterflies and is a delight to see. It is always fun to see a new species visit. This year has been especially busy. I'm going to assume its because it has been so dry that a lot of the wild flowers aren't blooming.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That's probably it Melsalz. We had a lot of rain so there are more butterflies everywhere around here. And when it gets dry they do flock to the yards where there are flowers blooming. Glad your yard is busy!! I think next year will really be great for you, especially bc we are already planning it now.

MsMaati, Nice shot. I was out collecting seeds from my Scarlet Milkweed and saw a caterpillar on the plants I think it was a Swallowtail. I'll have to look it up. Didn't have time to get a picture, was running late and had to leave. I'll be looking for more. It was yellow with spots such a cute little thing.

Here is a shot of a Zebra Swallowtail, We had a lot of these one year. But I haven't seen very many this year.
