Greetings! About 4 months ago I bought a panache fig tree which I was planning on using as a shade tree and for fruit. My brothers neighbor has a fig though its not a panache and it grows faster than a weed. For some reason mine hasn't even grown one leaf. I thought it might be because it was producing fruit when I bought it so about a month ago I picked the fruit to encourage growth and yet nothing. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you
Fig tree hasn't produced a single leaf.
Boy Cheeto, it sure sounds dead doesn't it? What pot was it in when you planted? Did you water well this summer? Mulch the root ball well? How did you prepare the hole when you planted?
Do you mean that it doesn't have any leaves at all, or is it that it hasn't grown any new ones since you bought it? If it doesn't have any leaves at all, then there's something wrong, but if it has leaves but just hasn't put out any new growth since you bought it, then you probably don't have anything to worry about. Did you plant it in the ground, or is it in a pot? If you planted it in the ground, it's only been 4 months so I'm sure it's been working on getting its roots established. Especially if it had fruit on it too, there's no way a tree can handle fruit, transplanting, and putting out new growth all at the same time. So if it's just that it hasn't put out any new growth, then I wouldn't worry about it at all at this point.
Oh, I did read that wrong didn't I? Lots of things simply don't grow during the heat of our summer Cheeto.
I don't know if you read it wrong or not--to me it's a little unclear whether it doesn't have any leaves at all or just not any new ones...hopefully Cheeto will be back to clarify!
Sorry if I didn't describe it well. It's alive, just not producing any leaves. Here is a pic. I did plant it in the summer which may be the explanation. I just started to get concerned when the edges of a couple of the leaves started to brown I assume from heat exposure. I water it every two to three days to keep the root ball moist.
Oh, I'd say it's doing fine! It should start growing in September.
Thank you for all the feedback.
I agree, definitely nothing to worry about. Summer is pretty stressful for newly planted things, especially in a hot climate like yours, so you should be happy that it's looking healthy rather than suffering, but I definitely wouldn't be expecting it to do a lot of growing now. And when it does start growing, don't panic if it doesn't take off and grow leaps and bounds right away--some things need to be in the ground a few years before they really take off (there's an old saying about the first year it sleeps, the 2nd year it creeps, and the 3rd year it leaps...this was written for perennials but often holds true for trees & shrubs too). Some things will take off faster than that, but don't panic if yours doesn't.
