Custard/cream cake filling

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Ok, I have tried sooooo many recipes that I have found online, and can't seem to find a custard/cream type cake filling that is firm enough to use, and won't run out the sides of a layered cake. Anyone have any tried and trued recipes for something like this?
