anyone know what this is?

I got this at a swap last year and was told it was esperanza. It doesn't look like it to me though. Anyone know what it is?

Thanks! Kim

I'm not an expert but the pictures of esperanza in the plant files show that they have trumpet shaped blooms. Yours look like cups. It's a pretty plant. I'm excited to hear one of the experts here chime in and identify it for you.

Yea...and the leaves are wrong too. I have some esperanza seedlings now and they have serrated edges, these ones are smooth.

I don't think it is butterfly weed, I have some of this planted and it looks nothing like it. I wish I could get a better pic but I'm not home right now, I'm in NY. Mom sent me these pics this morning since the plant is at her house now. The leaves are thinner than butterfly weed, and the stems are thinner too, almost vine-like at the ends when they grow but it isn't a vine. Hard to explain...lol. Flowers are bigger than the butterfly weed too, about the size of a dime or nickel?

I agree. I went googling and noticed that the flower in your pic are def. bigger. I gave it my best shot, lol.

No problem....thanks for looking! I'm not even sure where to start searching for an ID so I thought I'd try here. I'll cross-post in the plant ID forum too.

Looks like a senna.....

I thin it is Senna corymbosa, or a close relative.

Looks like a senna to me too.

Yep....I think that's it! Since these seem to be poisonous around cattle, we may be adding these two to my trade page for the Dallas RU.

Kim, if you are going to do that, may I have it please?

Oh, I forgot I can give you an Esperanza in exchange for the Senna.

I love Senna trees. Even tho I lost one due to all of the rain this summer...my other large one is covered in those beautiful yellow flowers.....and I have seedlings coming up all over the place to replace the one that I lost. :)

I'll put you down Josephine. I've got an esperanza now, just need to find a place for it and put it in the ground.

Kim, do you mean that you already had one? or are you talking about the one you are getting from me?

Bowling Green, KY(Zone 6a)

I have Esperanza and that plant is not Esperanza. It is a pretty plant but I have not seen it before.

Sorry Josephine....I meant I already had one. Picked it up on clearance at Lowes. Hopefully it is still alive as it was still in the pot when I left. I get back tonight, if it bit the dust then I would most definitely want one from you.

:) Kim
