i grow my seed in strained soil.i sift it to get out all the large lumps as the seed is so tiny.then i make sure it's moist & then i sow the seed on top & cover & almost always get germination.i do put it under the lights where it is the warmest.i grow mostly streps & sinningia.

If you had an algae problem, consider sending the potting mix through the microwave or oven first. You can also bleach the pots, use distilled or boiled water (cool it first!), and put the pots in a sealed container (like a bag).

My notes on seed starting are here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/gesneriads/discuss/22059/
I sterilize my mix by putting moist mix in the oven at about 175-225 for 2-4 hrs. It just sits there while I do other things..... I sometimes use one of those oven bags for roasting turkeys (note that they leak so you want a tray underneath) to keep things neat. Microwave works fine too.

You'll also find some other links for how to start seeds in the sticky thread on other gesneriads.

If you have enough seed, then you could try 2 or 3 different ways. Extra seed can be stored in a sealed bag/container in the fridge.

I just got some seeds and I am new at this two I did read the sticky and went into rachels reflection. then there was also Jeff Smith In Rachel it said to cut seed how I have no idea cause there are so tiny so I read Jeff's and that one has nothing to do with cutting the seeds but the good thing it has pictures, Rachels has the pictures Good luck
