Found this Snowberry clearwing hummingbird moth (Hemaris diffinis) this afternoon as I was weeding. He (she?) wasn't too camera-shy, either.
Regards,
David
Not really a bona fide hummer, but....
beautiful shots David
Hi David, Your photos are great. I love watching the hummingbird moths here too. Thanks! Sandy
Great shots David. I want to see one of these so bad. So is it that they like all the plants the BF's like because they are a moth or do they find interest in any plants a hummer might like because they are a hummingbird moth? Curious because I would like to know which plants to watch so I might some day get a glimpse of one of these beauties. Looks like they are interested in the same plants as most BF's. Sorry if that is a stupid question.
Leslie
Not a stupid question, but I'm not sure about the answer.
All I can say is that every time I've seen them, they have visited all sorts of flowers, not just a certain type. The one in the pics above fluttered around between roses, the lantanas (I have purple, yellow, and the "old fashioned" red/yellow), zinnias, coreopsis, etc.
It's really amazing that their wings move just like a hummer's do.....they just float in air.
Hope you get to see one soon!
Phlox is mostly where I see the moths.
David!
What a cutie!! I get them here too.. They like just about everything with a bloom, particularly salvias and buddleia I've noticed. What gets me is how tiny they are.
Nice pics!
:-D
They are so cute aren't they and they act just like the hummers, they are so curious.
