Callisia fragrans bloomed!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

But I thought I had missed it, can you believe that!?!?!

LOL...luckily, the next day, there were a few new blooms opened.

It is fragrant as we're told it is....very spicy/sweet...similar to some hoya's blooms.

Took this first photo when I thought I had missed the blooms completely.

I have never seen those flowers before. How old is your plant?

Hi Nan: Remember the little C. fragrans you sent me back in April? It has grown so much, I even took a pup from one and put it in another pot. They are growing a lot! No blooms yet, but oh how I'm hoping to get flowers! Can't wait for that fragrance! Here's what she looks like today:

Wow, Lin, that is some growth! What beauties you have....Congrats.

I'd never seen the blooms before, either, and never thought I would (and truthfully...almost didn't lol!)
I got this plant in a GW trade, probably in 2000, 2001?
It's been in the same 6" pot for a long time.

It's grown quite long and lanky....seems that when new runners/stolons develop, the leaf from the point of the stem where the stolon develops dies...so it's been kind of messy, too!

I have to say, though...it's also been very neglected, so maybe that's the key?

Yours is looking good, Lin!

Thanks Nan .... I've been thinking I need to do something cause I didn't think it looked that great. I think I need to have it be a bit more presentable. I might go find a nice pot to put it all in together and see how it does. Maybe a hanging basket!

What do you feed yours? I'm wondering if a plant food for blooming plants would be okay. Think I need to go read up on this plant again!

Found it in PF: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54577/ but it doesn't mention anything about fertilizer. There's two nice photo's of blooms in there too!

Lin ~ mine bloomed the first year. Longer growing season maybe? The blooms were not what I expected, a little anemic though fun. The comparison to the Hoya odor is correct tho. These buddies put on babies like crazy in the heat I guess.

Maybe I should move mine out into the direct sun? They've been in the screened pool enclosure and even though the sun is pretty hot, that screen does filter out quite a bit. I can't wait to get blooms .... even though they are kinda nondescript I look forward to the fragrance!!

I forgot to ask how long they will bloom.

Oh and do y'all fertilize yours and if so, what kind of plant food is best?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I wouldn't put it in direct sun. Mine was in afternoon shade when blooming. The blooms stayed for about 10 days if I remember. They haven't bloomed yet this year but I repotted them. Maybe being potbound did it. Don't know about anyone else buy I fertilize with a weak diluted solution in the water.

Thanks Pod .... I haven't fed this since Nan gave it to me in April! Probably would help if I gave it a shot of plant food once in awhile! I have been using VF-11 on some things with good results, guess I will try it on this Callisia too!

What is VF-11?

(Zone 1)

It's a plant food I heard about here on DG ... some Ace Hardware Stores carry it but you can order it direct from their web site too. I use it on everything from African Violets to Orchids .... haven't tried it on anything in the yard as it would be too costly. But, I really like it ... no burning or hazard to the plants. I had to get my Ace store to order a case for me cause they don't stock it. You can go to her website and someone says if you call their 800 phone number they will send a free 8z sample bottle - I think postage is $3.00. An 8z bottle makes 8 gallons if I'm remembering correctly. I put two tablespoons to a gallon of water for all my plant!

Here's the link for the website:

Thanks, I will check it out...
