Thanks in advance on the id's

and does someone know a source of peacock gingers? I'd like to add to my collection .

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

GingersRus had these on his website. http://www.gingersrus.com/cart/index.php?categoryID=6 I would think birdladyliz could also help you w/ them.

kaempferias are curious plants. I don't think about them until they sprout up, then I'm looking for them all over the place and can hardly find one.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

thanks with that link I was able to ID those peacocks the first peacock being the pulcha bicolor and the second one being silver spot.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Why is it though that peacock gingers loosing the coloring on their leaves

My mansonii doens't look much like it has any coloring righ tnow, but it is in part sun. that may be why, It use to have some nice silver markings on it.

HUm! I was looking on ebay for these gingers and looky what I found. someone from thailand is using the same picture that liz has up on her web site for galanga

I hate that when people do that.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

that is one I don't have. I think you meant the thai guy on ebay was using gingersRus pic, not liz'. In any case, shame on him!

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

That's what I meant, I figured he got it off her web site.

so which ones do you have vossner? maybe we can trade.

I have gilbertii, mansoni , satin checks, and those two above.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I wasnt careful about naming so I'm not sure what I have. I got them locally. Some at a nursery in dallas and some at home depot tucked away in a neglected corner.

I've thought about taking picture for IDng but mine fade w/ sun (even they only get about 2 hrs) so the markings are hard to see. They only one I can say for sure that I have is gilbertii.

sure would like to have the galanga, the solid green. looks so much like a hosta.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

That's one I don't have either.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

My masonii isn't really colorful right now either ( and I'm not sure why the color fades, but in this heat...). My kaempferias are in full shade, but if they get too much water the color fades on them.

Going back to your first two pictures -- It's obviously a spiral ginger/Costus of some kind. They look super healthy, so they'll probably bloom before long, either at the tips or the base or both, and it will be easy (or easier) to ID them with pics of the flowers.

They look a little short for blooming now, but they could start soon. When I get impatient, I use a high phosphate fertilizer (1-20-0) It usually works, but your Costus probably won't need it.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Kathy ann-how long have you had that costus ginger in the ground-over winter? The only reliable costus that I know of that comes back for our zone is the costus speciosus (crepe ginger). there are other costus that look similar to your foliage-two that come to mind are Costus pulverulentus ( have one in the ground and not blooming) and C. woodsonii (mine is in the ground and starting to bloom now-but not hardy here, I don't think-although I will be trying it!)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

None of them are in the ground, all in large pots, and I over winter them in the greenhouse. As none of the costus are hardy here.

Wow, you know what, I think it has a tag on it, I'll have to check it in the morning, I though t it was misnamed though, (I didn't pay attention to the tag, cause I thought the id was wrong) It may be the woodsonii, it sounds very familiar. I'll check tomorrow and post here what that tag said,

Silknoll, I just fertilized everything in pots a few days ago, took me 2 hours, and about 20 five gallon buckets of miracle grow, back breaking job, and it doesn't get done near as much as it needs to.

Believe it or not I got that costus last winter. It's not very old, it spread like wild fire, so did the variegated costus speciosus. It was tiny in the spring time, here it is now

Kathy Ann,

I decided I couldn't mix and pour the Miracle Gro cause I had to many plants, so now I just toss some of the concentrate in the pots and water it in. I haven't killed anything yet, but of course there could always be a first time .... you might want to try my method on a plant you don't care much about to see if it works for you. I read this method on the brug forum a year or two ago and one day in frustration did it.

I use the little scoop full in a 25 gallon pot and try to adjust according to pot size. BUT I've really gotten crazy in this heat, scooped it out with my hand and just flung it into pots or around plants that are in the ground, then of course watered them good but not so much that the fertilizer would run out or off.

Judy

PS We finally got rain today!!!! Good flow but I sure wish it had lasted longer. You know there is a severe shortage of water when the Kudzu is wilted.

Glad you finally got rain Judy.

I have tried the pelletized fertilizer, and have burned plants, and actually killed them, so I decided miracle grow was my best way to go.

I forgot to post what the tag says onthat # 1 & #2 pictures, it said zinzaber ottensetii, think that's right?

Tuskegee, AL(Zone 8a)

Zingiber ottensii?
