Amorph. Paeoni. Pups

Mandeville, LA(Zone 8b)

I have two paeonifolius neither of which has bloomed yet. This is my second summer with them and when I planted them this past spring, the bulbs were about the size of the palm of my hand. One of the plants has produced three small "pups" which have grown very, very little since they came up (which was in May). The second plant recently produced an offspring that is very nearly the same size as the parent plant.

I have read about "dividing" the bulbs but it's about as clear as mud to me. What exactly am I going to find and what exactly should I do? And WHEN do I do it? Last year the bulbs overwintered in their own pots. I just allowed them to dry out and put them in a place where they wouldn't freeze. In the spring I dumped them out and repotted them. But last year I didn't have "puppies". Please help.

Groovy,
In this species, it is very common to have more than one stalk out of one bulb. I have a bulb that is the size of a diner plate and it is just putting out a third stalk ( and mine stilll hasn't bloomed yet). when winter comes dig up the bulb and look at it, It might have little runners on the size of it, those can be broken off and started as a new plant. Also if you dig it up and you have two eye's of plant growth on the bulb you can cut the bulb in half and have two large plants, but i like to keep mine whole. Hope this helps.

Yes! It does! I will leave mine whole also unless there are obvious runners. I would never have the nerve to cut them in half. I've worried over them too much for that! Thanks for the reply.
