Historic landscape and plants

Chappell Hill, TX

Own a home circa 1852, trying to find what types of plants would be appropriate for that time frame, gets lots of shade so i planted gardenias in front and was thinking of hydrangeas on the side, anyone have any ideas.
Thanks

Azaleas would be good too, but you can never go wrong with native plants.
Another plant that comes to mind is Confederate Rose hibiscus, and Rose of Sharon.

Thanks frostweed, is the Confederate rose hibiscus the same as confederate rose mallow?

Yes, It is, Hardy Hibiscus are mallows.

Along with Josephine's suggestions, I would plant some antique camelias. They're just so pretty in the winter.

Iris, plain daylilies, mints, herbs, daisies, there is a long list you can plant if you are careful. Send me a D-mail and I will help you if I can.
