What's the best time to move a small tree?

(Zone 5a)

We are having a very large silver maple cut out of our front yard ... I'm so excited ... I've waited for years for this greedy tree to start dying so I'd have a legitimate excuse to take it out, and I think risk of a giant limb falling on the house is good enough. Elsewhere in the yard I have a young cherry tree that I would like to move to a better spot in the front since there will be room. I am in no rush and want to do it at the very best time for the tree's survival. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

No suggestions here... wait for an expert.

However, I had a maple die in my front yard where all my bird feeders are. I had any large limbs that could do any damage cut off (only a couple) and left the rest of the tree for the birds. They love it.

The 5th through the 19th of September with the 10th, 11th and 12th being prime...

Water well, add compost, do not fertilize, and mulch..Dont forget to stake it well so the winter winds will not topple it until it is well established

Thanks much! Will this be as good (or better) than waiting until the tree is dormant?

Better, because it will give it time before freeze to set a few roots..

Would this also be a good time to move perennials? The tree being gone and the change in light is a great excuse to totally change the front yard!
