Hi I've been toying with the idea of getting a variegated brug. I haven't thus far because I have heard they won't do well in the extreme heat, and I've got lots of it :) So which one would do best here? It is also very dry. I can supply shade but its gotta be able to stand up to some hot weather. Thanks for your input.
Which Variegated Brugs Can Take the Heat?
All of them have done ok for me. Jamie, Peaches & Cream, Maya, Axelrose (green/green variegation)... they've all grown well for me. Even Snowbank has done ok. And here in Houston, TX, we know a thing or two about heat ourselves. ;^)
Jamie, Axelrose & P&C are in pretty much full sun. Snowbank is in part to mostly sun. Maya is in a good deal of bright shade. Those in full or mostly full sun lose leaves in the hottest temps (but all my brugs do that).
Maya has been a real trooper for me, on my deck in direct sun from 11ish to 3 or 4, light shade before and after. We've had heat index/and/or actual temps into triple digits for weeks now and it does make her drop a few leaves and the blooms aren't pretty as long, but it's still stands up. It does take more water when it's so hot, but everything does.
I have Maya, it's done great in shade with a drip line. My only problem is the DARN spider mites :(
Thanks for the suggestions on variegates. It sounds like Maya would do well in the shade here. I really like the foilage of axel rose, maybe I will try that one. If they are working well for you guys maybe they will do good for me as well. When it cools off a little in the fall I will order those two for sure. Thanks
