In need of Aquarium plants
Hi Kelly,
I would offer you some of my aquarium plants, but they are down with some bad black brush algae right now, and you definitely don't want any of that!! I got all of my aquarium plants from a guy on eBay and it was a great deal. If you're interested I can get his name for you. I'm not in any way affiliated w/ him, it was just a great deal. The plants filled out super fast and have done great. As far as I can remember there were no snails in the plants I got from him, which is my biggest pet peeve. I've had these plants for probably 18 months and they've taken very little care. I even gave a bunch of them away to my niece last summer and you can't even tell. If you do have to buy plants this may be your best bet.
Good luck with the fishums!
Heather
Kelly,
Didn't the pet store have dry bulbs suitable for planting in an aquarium?
I saved the lable from mine. It reads "Grow your own live aquarium plants (imported from Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Thailand, Malaysia, and India.)
The back of the lable says to "drop the bulbs in the aquarium for a few days. When roots develop, simply bury the roots along with 3/4 of the bulb, with shoots up, and roots down."
The rest reads, "Important! Plants need oxygen and nutrients. Bulbs will not sprout in a clean freshly planted aquarium. Provide at least 8 hours of light a day."
The package consisted of an assortment of Aponogeton:
Crispus
Undulatus
Ulvaceus
Echinatus
Nymphaea Rubra
" Stllata
Rigidifolius
Boivinianus
Natans
Not all species are included; they're randomly packed, so it's a mystery what you'll be getting. I've had great luck with the ones that sprouted. (4 did, 1 didn't).
If you don't have any luck getting plants, I'd be happy to pick up a pack or two for you, and send them to you.
They have a website: www.aquariumplant.com
Here's a pic of the front of the lable:
Marsha - how cool is that?!? I'm going to hit my Petsmart and Petco to look for those. My Jack Dempseys tend to eat anything, including fish, unfortunately.
thanks everyone! i am going to check out that website now.
Chantell,
I got mine at Petco.
And BOY, do I know about cichlid's aggressive tendencies; my mom raised Dempseys, and I had Oscars. A friend of mine had Red Devils.
Mine never did breed, but I couldn't sex them, and didn't know about getting six juvies and letting a natural pair develop.
I never had a shred of greenery in the tank. Usually, in less than an hour, it was destroyed. Even the plastic ones I glued to rocks!
The only tankmate that held his own was a HUGE plecostomus. They used to pick on his dorsal fin, until one day he lost it and went after them. There were Oscar scales flying all over the place; after that, peace reigned in the tank. I still laugh to this day thinking about it. They were put in their place big time!
Kelly,
I hope this helps you with your plant problem; bulbs are so much easier to ship than live aquatic plants.
Good Luck!
Marsha.
Marsha,
Now that is a funny story!! I believe mine (only by luck) ended up being a male and female. They're about 5 years old now...no fry yet though. I would love it if they'd let a plecostomus actually live in there with them. You wouldn't think it would be an issue since the plecostomus' are fairly easly going and stay at the bottom! Guess I need to find someone who's plecostomus has outgrown their tank and offer a home eh?
Chantell, there are two places that have large fish and reasonable prices fairly nearby. One is a pet store in Leesburg.
I think this must be it.

Diane - you amaze me!!! Thank you!
One of my favorite places for aquarium supplies is That Fish Place, in PA. Even with shipping, it's generally less expensive for me to order from them than to get stuff at my FLS (local fish store). And they have wonderful freshwater plants, which I'm pretty sure they ship. :-)

(I'm not associated with them in any way except as a customer.)
(If I had plants, I'd share with you... but I'm mostly saltwater at the moment, except for a betta in a plant-less bowl.)
Oh Critter...if I ask nicely may I see your salt water tank at the swap? I LOVE them!!! Don't have one...but in awe over other's!!!
LOL, you won't be able to miss it. 70 gallons, and it's in the front of the family room. And the 30 gallon tank is on the end of the kitchen counter... it just has hermit crabs in it now but eventually will be a clown & anemone tank. Oh jeepers, I'll have to try to get at least the main tank looking more presentable! Well, the fish are awesome regardless. :-)
If you saw my huge Jack Dempsey tank right now you wouldn't worry about cleaning yours...LOL!!! Still need to take the time to look for a huge pleco that they won't terrorize!! Hmmm....maybe a channel cat too...LOL
I bought some of those aquarium bulbs at wal-mart and they did great! Some even bloomed on the water surface. That was before i put Convict cichlids in the tank, they would tear up the tank and breed constantly! Got rid of those and put in some Jack Dempsies and they killed most of my other cichlids, and they breed faster than the convicts! They will rearrange pea gravel into mounds and lay the eggs on the glass bottom. I have sat and watched them pick up the gravel one piece at a time and deposit the gravel into piles. They are the terrors of the tank! Sorry about that, i seem to be straying out of the plant section. Good luck with your plants....
Kelly, I have a pond and live on a lake. We raised Angelfish commercially for many years, I could easily send you a bagfull of my pond plants, which were relocated lake plants 15 years ago. I'd love to trade for daylilies. I am assuming that this is a freshwater tank. If you are interested I'll start the alum process now to "clean" them before shipping.

I just remembered i bought some plants for my tank from a pet shop. Five days later there was a snail explosion in the tank. Now i check out the plants closely before i buy. They are difficult to get rid of them, they were not the desirable snails. RR
oh yes the little pond snails : ) my cichlid would eat them up. he does okay with large snails but little ones are gone in a flash. mittsy you have dmail.
kelly
I checked and no Dmail from lovesdaylilies, Kelly, could you resend?

Hi Kelly, do you still need some plants? I have some anacharis that needs a home.
I'd be happy to trade for some of your hens & chicks or will do postage.
