Lauri,
I'm ways too late to your post... I'm sorry. Not that I could perform CPR or anything in hope to save your tree. I'm sorry for the lost. I gave my daughter a beautiful Gingen Ficus Bonsai one year out West - when I returned to visit her it was but remnant of bark and roots on the tree! Losing a bonsai, ah I can relate to the feeling, especially when it's a gift from someone that is dear to you.

Take a pic. of your little precious next time. Look up its identity and read up on its culture. You know, like me, too much cold weather isn't going to do me good. lol I'm a novice at Bonsai, but being an avid gardener, the skills kind of transfer to caring for little trees in a pot. And what I do learn from reading on bonsai techniques do transfer back to my gardening hobby. So, curl up with a good book on Bonsai this winter, with a cup of New England Chowder, follow up with some hot Chocolate; is my recommondation.
Happy gardening,
Kim

May I suggest a good reading? "The complete Book Of Bonsai" by Harry Tomlinson. Abbeville Press Publishers; New York London.
